NYC - july 4th - 1st time for boys 12 and 14,
know the basic to do list and am searching this site, been to nyc many times, but never with my boys! their first time, looking at apt. to rent for a week, many available on line, wonder about neighborhood, seems upper east and west are residential best, but access to sites is a question. don't want to be cabbing everywhere, but don't want to stay in an office building. any neighborhood hints in midtown?

It's easier to get around the city from the upper west side - since it's narrower than the east and h as 2 subway lines versus only one on the east. Mid/upscale residential and tons of moderate/inexpensive places to eat that should satisfy kids.
But - be very careful with apartments - esp on Craig's list -many are fake - and almost all are illegal. Search below for a couple of reliable agencies. And do be aware of what you're getting into - many brownstones are 5 floor walk-ups with minimal security.

VRBO (vacation rentals by owner) is the name of the website where i am finding the rentals. they all have comments, but of course they are positive as they are all screened by the lister. will watch for craigs list. i do think the upper west side sounds good, love that area near zabar's...my husband stresses a safe area, i tend to not be too uptight/cautious...any word to the wise? yes, i can see a doorman building would be prefered, just thought a hotel for a week with kids and overpriced breakfasts sounds like the kind of thing that would send my husband over the edge! thanks for the tips,

Getting into a doorman building is more problematic - since, as I mentioned, you are illegal. And a nosy doorman - or one put on watch by the co-op board - will want to know who you are visiting, relationship to them etc. (If I saw strangers coming in/out of oue building by themselves I would definitely find out who they were - and the same is true of many condos/co-ops).
Before you go understand all the issues of renting an apartment (is the building a co-op, a condo, a rental? what type of security, etc) and make sure you have a live 24 hour phone number in case there's any problem with plumbing etc.

You might check out neopatrick's NY trip reports, he always has good advice about vacation apartment rentals in NYC, and there are several threads about it. For the most part, it is illegal here, but there are some condos that allow it. It is more often than not for a month tho, not one week. You might also check out the building know as Worldwide Plaza, on 8th Avenue and 50th Street or so - it is a newer condo complex in the very fun neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, the western part of the midtown/theatre district.

There are just too many scams on apts. booked online to make it worth the time and trouble for a week's stay, not to mention the issue of legality. Neopatrick generally stays for a month and that's a whole other thing.
If what you want is more space and a kitchen, there are dozens of suite hotels that offer that option. In addition to the ones already mentioned, I'd add the Beaconhotel.com and the Milburnhotel.com both on the upper west side near Central Park and the Museum of Natural History. The Embassy Suites downtown in the financial district is another nice option in the summer. They include a full cooked breakfast with room rate. The Affinia Dumont might be the very best option as it's not far from where the fireworks go off in the East River.

Boys that age like some of the off Broadway shows like Stomp, Blue Man Group and Fuezerbruta. I think of the 3 you mention, Billy Elliot is most appropriate for them. In the Heights is a big crowd pleaser with hip hop music and dance. West Side Story will be open too.
