Well Air BnBs are illegal in New York State (all sublets less than 30 days are unless the owner is still in the premises). They don;t tell you - but they are. May or may not be a problem. But if there is a problem you have no protection since credit cards don;t enforce illegal contracts.

Have you worked out the days and driving distances/times? This seems like a LOT of territory to cover.

Also do you have your passports for Canada - IMHO Niagara Falls is much better from the Canadian side than the New York one.

Late September is usually beautiful weather in New England. Some of the great lobster shacks are open weekends only after Labor Day so if you are looking for lobster, google best lobster shacks for a list. Five Islands offers a beautiful view. The ones near Pemaquid light house offer a nice drive on country roads. I agree that 2 weeks is not a lot of time since you are coming from Wisconsin. You will probably have to do some interstate I95 traveling from Acadia NP to Boston and that is quite boring so pick a good place for lunch.

GPS and googlemaps are not the best way to plan a scenic trip. I just checked for Niagara to Acadia. Awful choices. From Albany head to Brattleboro VT. If it's a Saturday you can stop at the farmers market for lunch (ethnic food vendors). Head to Keene NH, then to Concord NH. This will be state highways until you get to I89 but when you connect to I93 go north to I393 then Rt 4 to Portsmouth where you can connect with I95. Rt 4 goes thru Antique Alley so watch out for people making sudden stops although we have not had any problems. When the scenery starts getting beautiful you will go past Wagon Hill Farm where you can stretch your legs. It's open to the public and there's a path to the water. Keep driving over the bridges which take you across Great Bay. You'll connect with limited access hwy and it's just a few miles to I95.

Googlemaps tells you to take Rt 101 across NH but that is a boring limited access hwy.

DH likes to stop in VT at a classic car place. I can't remember which magazine or classified magazine they publish. Fun little gift shop. You might want to visit Owls Head Transportation Museum. Weekend events make it even more interesting.

If you can spare the time, I would suggest getting off I95N in Brunswick ME to travel Rt 1. You won't see much coast but there are some interesting places since Rt 1 goes right thru Wiscasset and Camden. Drive to the top of Mt. Battie. Great place for a picnic lunch.

How much of Boston do you want to see? It's very unusual for hotels to offer free parking. Double-check if an airb&b does.

After turning the Lake corner at Chicago, head north and go through Canada to Niagara Falls Canada...
It's a much nicer ride than all highway... After your visit to the Falls, cross the border to the U.S. And head to NY Rt 20 in the village of East Aurora, NY... You can drive across Route 20 the entire length of New York State and it runs across the northern top of the Finger Lakes... Sections of the road are designated as Scenic Routes of America.... Stops include Seneca Falls, Geneva, Lake tours, wineries, B&B s, and quaint villages and antiques.

Have fun

Garyt really knows his NY.

US 20 is beautiful, and it goes by or near interesting places: Seneca Falls (home of the Women's Movement), Skaneateles, Cooperstown ( baseball hall of fame and interesting farm and art museums).

I would then head to Saratoga Springs, then cross into Vermont. It just gets better and better!

But it is a loooong way to Acadia, and longer still back via the Cape. I wouldn't try to do all this in one trip.
