I have four young children (7,6,4 and baby)and we are looking for a hotel in the Newport area that could accomodate our large family. We need a suite type situation as the one room with two double beds no longer works for us.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Some one has suggested we stay in Mystic, CT. How far from Mystic to Newport?
Many thanks.

There are several 'timeshare' condo resorts in Newport that rent out the condos that might be what you are looking for...the Wellington; The Bay Voyage, Inn on Long Wharf; Inn on the Harbor; Island Manor; and one we toured and liked very much Long Wharf resort...it has a full kitchen, some of the others do not. No you do NOT have to listen or take their tours. All are 1, 2, or 3 bedroom condos.
Try Karen Taylor - Owner of Taylor Made Reservations. 401-848-0300. Her service is free, and she knows everyone. She has suites called inn-suites downtown, perfect with kids.
Otherwise try Oceancliff (tho not downtown, good for kids )846-6667.
I also like the Bay Club, downtown. They have townhouse suites that are quite reasonable. 849-8600
Sanford Covell House has an apartment - quite reasonable - on the water. Best sunset in town besides Castle Hill. SC Inn has a heated salt water swimming pool. Nice residential neighborhood w/in walking distance to town. 401-847-0206
Leave your car somewhere, rent some bikes, and enjoy Aquidneck Island!
Best Western Atlantic Beach Hotel is new and across the street from the beach. We paid $159 but were upgraded to a huge top floor suite with two king beds and a pull out, and kitchenette.
Kace: If you intend to spend much time actually in Newport, Mystic is too far away (about 1 hour) to really use as a base. If you are going in summer and your kids will want to visit the beach every day, the Best Western is a good option, the downside being that you will have to drive to get to most other Newport attractions, and parking (in the summer) downtown can be a real pain. If you stay downtown you can walk most everywhere, but get a place with a pool (again, if you coming in summertime) to keep the Kids happy. "Waterfront" in downtown Newport mostly means harborfront and while offering pleasant views, you don't want the kids swimming there.
Just to clarify: The Best Western mentioned above is not "downtown" but across from the beach where the Cliff Walk Starts. Don't confuse it with the older B.W. near the Jai Lai. The Atlantic Beach Hotel phone is 401-847-5330. Also, the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence is very nice; my children loved it when they were younger. Have fun!
