Newport RI Tips & Tricks

Newport Rhode Island Is a wonderful spot for families looking to get away or just a couple looking for a romantic weekend. My wife and I stayed in Newport this past week and after seeing the sites and trying to do it all. i thought i might offer some help to those that might follow in my foot steps.

Newport RI is a fun filled island with plenty of things to do. My first suggestion is finding a place to stay that is right in the downtown area, it may cost you a little more but it will be well worth it when you don't have to drive or take a cab ( they make you wait forever).

After finding a place to stay looking up a few local restaurants would be wise (there are so many to choose from). The locals will help with the final say but it's a good idea to have a list of places you would like to go to. After the two major things are out of the way (Eating And Sleeping) It is all about fun from here on out. If you are a younger person, you might look for some nightlife ( which Newport has a lot of) or if your older ( like me) you might want to take in a mansion or possibly the beach (if its nice out).

Newport Is a wonderful place to visit and has plenty of fun things to do, it is the perfect mix of history and fun. A website that helped me out with my trip (planning and dinning) was www.RockNewport.com They Have A great rating system and it's easy to use.

Have fun in Newport

I don't want to assume this is strictly an ad on your part, although this being your first post, and it reads like one - and you never tell us where did you stay, eat, drink, etc - so why don't you share those things, I'd love to know -

and if it is an ad, those are not allowed under the fodor posting regulations, so don't be surprised if this post disappears if the editors see it

We are in Newport every July, which is busy busy season, and I've never waited long for a cab at all staying right in the harbor - allow 15 min and you are fine except on Fri or Sat nights around 7-8 call earlier.

So, for others who might be thinking of going to Newport , I would have to say, in my opinion,
this site you show is good, but I think you would have fare better consulting gonewport.com before your next trip, and links to cliffwalk.com, the ten mile drive, oceandrivenewport.com, the masnions, etc -
this site is ok, but does not list half the restaurants we've eaten at over the past fifteen years of visiting -
nor the best B & B around - Francis Malbone House -
so I think there are better sites for you to use next trip, which might make for a better list -

in the meantime, where did you stay and eat? and what di dyou do for your get a way?

Well... thanks for the other site's but I found the site I used to be helpful and to the point. We stayed at the Newport Marriott and it was great, right in the downtown area of Newport. We ate at a few places, some of the best were as follows. 22 bowens had wonderful steak and the scallops in bacon were to die for. The brick alley but was a wonderful place for dinner (if i didn't talk to the bellman at the hotel I would have waited for hours, he called over for me and I only had to wait 15 min). As for nightlife the landing was a good time... a younger crowd. However, for the older set or the folks that love music the Newport blues cafe rocked. as far as breakfast went I talked to the guys at the hotel and they suggested the Atlantic grille which was a local hangout and was amazing. My wife wanted to go to the Breakers( one of newports fantastic mansions). We drove over there and toured the wonderful house(saw how the other half live) and then walked on the cliff walk. Those were some of the high points of our week and there are many more, to many for this post. The site I listed helped me get my barrings and the hotel staff was wonderful in pointing me in the right direction. I hope this provides more in-site to my trip to Newport.
