Newport, RI restaurants

Hi-
I am looking for any good suggestions for restaurants and bars in Newport. We will be spending a long weekend there.
We are interested in any type of food, price does not matter and location would be within walking distance of Thames Street.
Any comments-positive or negative-are welcome.

The Black Pearl, Scales and Shells, White Horse Tavern, and La Petite Auberge are all excellent places to eat.
For bars, no "insider" recommendations are needed; since Newport has everything from sort of upscale Jazz clubs to alternative rock to local pub-type establishments, all you do is walk down Thames around 9:00 pm and look through the bar windows or listen at a doorway to see if it is what you are looking for.

check out the phantomgourmet.com. They have reviewed a number of restaurants in Newport. My personal favorite was a place called Asterix and Obelix - its on Thames but far down away in a residential area. Also a favorite is the Black Pearl. Castle Hill is known for Sunday Brunch.

Try the Sea Farer along Thames Street... inside or outside.. For those wise guys..Red Lobster opened a restaurant in N.H. and invited the press for a preview.. when the owner asked how they liked it..they said it was the worst garbage they ever ate... it closed..never opened to the public.. Red Lobster is not seafood to New Englanders...lol I don't even know if there is one in N.E.

Now "duh troll buster", come on, couldn't you see they were just having fun with those Red Lobster posts? It was tongue in cheek, not even a troll. I wouldn't think it'd be necessary to explain that one...

Lorraine,

One of my favorite casual spots is Brick Alley Pub, food is excellent and they have great frozen drinks. There is usually a wait though. As for bars, Christie's on Thames is a fun place for drinks and they usually have good bands on weekends. It's usually crowded, get there early before the cover begins.

Have fun!

For very casual but excellent fried seafood (RI best clams) try Flo's at First Beach, for casual meal recommend Yesterday's on Washington Square.

I second the Brick Alley Pub, I am from the UK and had my first trip to Newport last year, we had to wait for a table but it was really worth it, the black spaggehtti with crab and scallops was to die for.

BAP is a good suggestion. For food, Salas' on Thames is way cool. Try the baked fish...

Lorraine,
Whatever you do, do NOT go to the Clarke Cooke house. I had the worst meal in my life, the service was pretentious and surly, waiter staff were PUNKS! I kid you not...I was treated so rudely. Instead, opt for 22 Bowens for great atmosphere and great food for dinner or the Castle Inn. Black Pearl is good for lunch, but eat in the dining room and not the tavern. Wharf Pub has great fish and chips and excellent chowder. Enjoy!

Mama Louisa's has fabulous Italian food & is a warm, friendly place. A bit of a hike from Thames, though not impossible.

The best dining experience in Newport has to be Castle Hill Inn ( the location for Joanie's wedding on the show "Providence"). It is located on Ocean Drive, sits on the grass near the rocky cliffs, and is the best place to watch the boats in the summer and the seals in the winter. It isn't cheap and it isn't walkable to Thames Street. This is our favorite spot an we go here for special occasions. I also like "upstairs" at the Clarke Cooke House. You need to reserve a table on the deck for the best people watching. We ate here several weeks ago and it was great.
Christie's is very touristy but they have excellent stuffed quahogs (stuffies) and great fried clams and fish. If you have a car, drive over the bridge to Jamestown and eat at Tricia's Caribbean Grill - this place is new this summer and they have fabulous food. Try their "Corn fries" !!

Finally, Parrot Mom is correct - Red Lobster left RI with it's tail between it's legs! We have too many great seafood restaurants in this area!

Just got back from a week stay in Newport, excellent restaurants, try linguini and clams at Scales and Shells, baked lobster at the Marriot, clam chowder at Black Pearl or Brick Alley Pub. And a good cheap breakfast over in Middleton, Ocean View Restaurant...
