New England Canada Road Trip

Hi My wife and i are early 60 and we are planing a round trip road trip of about 2 weeks, we are flexible. We will leave on Oct 14th from Philadelphia. It would be great to see foliage a little earlier but I can not leave until Oct.14. The purpose of the trip is to see a part of the US that we have not seem. We love to walk a little (probably not more than a mile), visit history, foliage, mountains, and the beauty of the US. Our itinerary is as follows
Oct 14 Phila to Mystic, CT overnight at Mystic
Oct 15 Mystic to White Mountains stay at White Mountains for three days
Oct 18 White Mountains to Acadia National Park Stay in Acadia for two days and nights
Oct 20 Arcadia to halfway to Quebec City
Oct 21 Arrive in Quebec City and spend three days
Oct 24 Quebec City to Montreal and spend three days
Oct 27 Montreal down the Hudson River Valley and stay somewhere about halfway to Phila
Oct 28 Return to Philly

I do have many questions and I would appreciate any advice
1. What do you think of the time and travel of this trip. I usually stay in places like Quality Inns and then use that as a base to explore the area. What base areas should I use in White Mountains and Arcadia
2. I was not sure if going to Mystic CT or Newport, RI would be a better idea for a day of visiting
3. I can not do the 5 to 6 hr drive from Acadia to Quebec city in one trip and I was looking for a place to stop about half way to spend a day and overnight to rest.
4. I also would like a place to stop about halfway between Montreal and Philly to spend a day and rest overnight
Thank you for any suggestions and help

Bar Harbor Motel is clean & friendly with a continental breakfast included and a 48hrs-before-arrival cancellation policy. If booking elsewhere in Bar Harbor, do check the cancellation penalities and fine print.

Halfway to Quebec, consider Bishops Country Motel in Jackman. (This place also has a 48 hr cancel deadline.)

You can book either online, or over the phone.

By Oct 14, I think the trees in the White Mountains are going to be bare. If you are going to see some of the other attractions such as The Flume, then fine but there should be good foliage further south, perhaps visit Sturbridge Village and then drive up thru western MA to Billings Farm Museum in Woodstock VT.

Just be aware if you choose a route from the White Mountains to Acadia, the shortest distance may be cross country further north, via Rt 2, which we took last summer. It's a pleasant but very rural drive. Not many places to stop for meals. You would be better off going Conway NH to Portland ME so you can enjoy more of Maine's coast. We like to get off I95 in Brunswick ME and travel the rest of the way on Rt 1. The huge crane at Bath Iron Works in very big and there were two stealth destroyers under construction which you could see as you drove the bridge.

If you've never been, Mystic Seaport is probably a better choice than Newport but it depends on what period of history you find most interesting. I liked Sturbridge Village better.

It looks like Saratoga Springs NY would be halfway on your return trip.

Philadelphia to Mystic is a little less than a 4 hour drive if you can time it to miss rush hour near New York City. Mystic Seaport is nice and if you are interested in maritime history well worth a visit. The town has shops and an interesting bascule bridge that goes up every hour to let the boat traffic go through. Mystic is in the town of Stonington and Stonington Burrough has lots of restored homes and some nice shops and places to eat also. Plenty of dining and lodging options in the Mystic/Stonington area.

If that does not interest you, there is a submarine museum/memorial with the sub Nautilus in Groton as well as sites in New London like the Coast Guard Academy, Custom House, and other museums. Plenty of lodging in Groton/New London area too.

I don't know what the mapping programs tell you, but when you leave to go to the White Mountains, head back (west/south) on 95 about 5 miles and take rt 32 north to 395 north which turns into 290 in Massachusetts to 495 north then probably 93 or 3 north to wherever you are headed in NH.
