need advice on move to Atlanta
I have a job offer to move to Duluth, GA and am in the process of deciding whether the geographical move is what I want to do. I currently live in charlotte, NC and like it a lot here.
Was wondering what Atalnta is like?
I am a 24 year old guy, no family or kids...
Specfic points of interest/concern are:
I like living in city downtowns and was wondering whether there are any nice apartments in central atlanta. What kind of rates would one need to pay there? Is it safe to live there? Would commute to duluth be too much?
Culturally, despite being a small city, Charlotte has a pretty active scene with theaters, visiting broadway shows, etc. Are these popular in Atlanta?
I have a boat. Do any areas near Duluth have lakes that would be a good place to keep a boat?
Finally any general thumbs up or down on Atlanta vs. Charlotte.
Thanks, Michael

Hi, I just moved from ATL after living there for 13 years. This is my opnion and I hope you receive many responses, as I have only one point of view. I lived in Midtown most of the time and when I left was paying about $725 (cheapest 1 brdm I could find; went from $650 to $725 in 4 years)for a SMALL one bedroom apt. Utilities were cheap. But I could walk to the park, MARTA (subway) and had free parking. Parking in the city is major. You may find a great pad, but realize you have nowhere to put your car or have to pay. I did live outside the city for a a few months and commuted for about 50 miles each way. Rent was about 1/2 the amount for a big house. Traffic is major. You will need to weigh out what lifestyle is more important to you right now. If you go out alot, want to be close to an endless selection of restaurants, parks, theaters, hustle & bustle, then I would pay more and live in a smaller space closer in. If you want more privacy, maybe you don't come into the city that often, have a reliable vehicle and don't mind driving, then you could live farther out. The ARTS is not a problem, there are so many galleries, cool restaurants that have art, bars, theaters, big productions, small productions, local "scenes", arts and crafts, that is the best thing. If you live far out, consider living near a MARTA station. Then you can go to the airport, sporting events, etc. without driving in. Just my opnion. Good luck ! It's a beautiful, culturally diverse city, but it can be expensive, so you are wise to do some research first.

islerule,
I travel between ATL and CLT a lot for business. Although similar, the cities are quite different. ATL is three times the size of CLT...4 million plus.
The midtown area (downtown) is very diverse. There are now many lofts, condos, and apts in this area. If you work in Duluth, your commute would be against traffic...about 30 minutes. I'm actually in the vicinity as well.
Plenty of arts and entertainment. Always something going on in the
A-T-L. Cost of living is also higher. However, shopping around will get you some great deals.

One of my best friends just moved from Buckhead to downtown Chicago (she's a half block off N. Michigan Ave towards the Lake) and is paying less in rent in Chicago. One of the reasons she moved is because Atlanta is a somewhat difficult place for straight women to date.
Great city, similar to Charlotte (think driving is bad now), more amenities.

I loved Atlanta. If it would have had and ocean we would have stayed there when my husband retired, after living there for 9 years, last June. My son lives in Dunwoody, right by the Marta line and he loves it there. Big pluses. Fabulous restaurants, great weather, lots of things to do....Music Midtown, sporting events etc. Biggest drawbacks: TRAFFIC! I think a 24 year ols would love Atl. it is a young person's city IMO. I lived in Buckhead for 2 years. I loved it. And still miss it dearly!
My rent was about 740/ month and did not include utilities. It had a great view of downtown, and was up the street from lenox and phipps malls. The best thing about Atlanta is the people. They are friendly, warm and very welcoming to new people. The other great thing is the weather, but that wont make a huge difference to you... but to me, being from chicago, weather was big!
Im sure you'll love Atlanta... Ohhh, by the way... the women are gorgeous... and if you're gay, the men are gorgeous too!
Best of luck!
