N'awlins trip report
Our first trip minus kids and dogs is over. We had a wonderful room in Metairie complete with a in room jacquzzi (sp.) The drive down was pleasant and we were happy to use this tub immediately. We enjoyed dinner at a mexican restaurant in Metairie called Cucos. Raspberry margarita yummy. We didn't eat it but there was something on the plates that looked like scrambled 100year old eggs, yuck. Food was good.
Highly recommended Cafe Du Monde was a disappointment. Beignets were good but messy, few choices in coffee. Was amazed that regardless of the time of day or night the place was packed.
Dinner aboard the Steamboat Natchez was enjoyable food was wonderful most tender meat I have ever eaten. The prizes given away in the on-board drawing were marketing schemes to try and get you to buy condos. I wondered why they wanted our yearly income amount on the paper used in the drawing.
We decided to drink the "trendy" drinks as we travelled thru the French Quarter. So we carried around our Handgrenade cup as we enjoyed the atmosphere. Festive and watered down alcohol. We wondered how many people were actually as drunk as they acted and how college kids afforded drinks enough to get drunk at $9 a drink.
Second day we drove out to Bayou Gauche and took an airboat tour. This was the highlight of the trip. The boat captain was a definite Cajun and knew the bayou like the back of his hand. We fed catfish that were huge and knew by the sound of the boat there was food to be held. We chased gators thru the swamp and even travelled over land, disrupting some muskrat love in progress.
Returning to the city we enjoyed dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. What a fun place. Our waitress, Jenny, was wonderful and the atmosphere was very family oriented. The trivia game that ask questions about the movie "Forrest Gump" was fun. I was the only one who knew what kind of shoes Jenny wore at her wedding to Forrest. Do you know?
Went to Aquarium of the Americas, lotsa of tanks of water and pretty fish. Was disappointed again by the tunnel that looks ominous in pictures but is just a little walkway when you are actually there. The 3D Imax movie was interesting. Finally got on the trolley and paid $1.25 to go 2 blocks. Visited Farmer's and French market. it seems this city thrives on the impulse buying of tourists. With that said, we did purchase 8 T shirts and several drink glasses.
Final meal was at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. no watered down alcohol here! After an Incommunicado, Mango Margarita and can't remember what else paid another $1.25 to go 2 blocks and headed back to the hoteland the jacquzzi. All in all our biggest expense was parking, about $14 per night. if we ever return to NOLA we will stay in the area of the FQ and walk.
Oh I must mention the guy with a little pug-like dog. The dog sat on a quilt on the steps and looked cute, chased a pigeon on command and set up for a puppy treat. Many people stopped to take pictures of this dog and slip dollar bills under its collar. Reiterating that tourist will spend their money on anything.
Also a couple of street musicians playing a guitar and violin quit well. DH told them they would get $10 if they could play my favorite song, Sukiyaki, they didn't know it, he hummed a few bars and they got it, and $10.
We also visited the cemetaries and were amazed at how the bodies are piled on top of one another in the tombs. A buggy ride thru the French Quarter proved to be both relaxing and informative.
All in all it was a relaxing and enjoyable trip. Now the question of where to next!!

i wanted to add that the instructions to Bubba Gump Shrimp Company are WRONG. It instructs to get off I10 at Esplanade and travel to Decatur. NO No NO. Take Canal to The parking lot next to the Wyndam hotel and walk to Decatur. Bubba's is at 429. I ate the "Bucket of Boat trash" my first craw-dads!!
