Nashville - Where to stay? Music City vs Downtown?

Heading to Nashville in June. Would like to stay near the bars and activity. Not sure if Music City or Downtown is the place to stay? Will we need a car while there? Is there public transportation?

We really aren't into museums, but more the music and bar scene.

Any "must see" recommendations?

Thank you,

Music City is a nickname for Nashville as a whole - do you mean Music Row? If you stay around there you'd definitely want a car, as it's not really near anything you'd really want to do as a tourist. (Music Row is mainly music offices. There is a strip of businesses including a couple of bars at the roundabout, but it's nothing to plan a trip around.)

Whether you need a car depends on what you want to do and how long you'll be here. If you're just here for a weekend and everything you want to do is downtown (honky-tonks, Hall of Fame, Ryman, Cash museum), you'd just stay downtown and be fine without one. But if you'll be here longer and/or you want to go to more than one of the Hermitage, Belle Meade, East Nashville, 12 South, Franklin, the Opry, Lynchburg, the Bluebird, etc, then yes, you'll probably want a car. Our public transportation isn't geared for tourists.

Aside from the honky-tonks, most of the music venues are also not in the downtown tourist area (with the notable exception of the Ryman). But if by "music" you mean honky-tonks, you should be fine without a car.
