My NYC Itinerary...with 2 teenage girls
Well, the time is almost here, leaving Monday. Any comments and suggestions are highly welcome! Arrive noon, taxi LGA to Holiday Inn Midtown Manhattan. Taxi to Canal Street for shopping, eat somewhere in China Town, taxi back. Walk around theatre district at night. Tues morning, take NYC Party Shuttle tour (5 1/2 hours) and see all the sights, no hassle. Works for me! Dinner at La Prima Donna , followed by show "Rent". Not my choice, theirs. Wednesday, Central Park, Bloomie's Macy's, etc and a peek at Madison Ave. Maybe a lah ti dah lunch. Have not decided on dinner, but I'm thinking pizza..and would like an evening activity besides Broadway. Any ideas? Thursday, kids choice, we have until 3 pm before leaving. They really don't want to do museums, don't want to get up at 6 to see GMA, etc.

Went to NYC last weekend but haven't done my trip report yet. We went to see Bodies the Exhibition and it was FASCINATING. May make some squeamish, but if you and the girls can tolerate it, the exhibit really is amazing. Bonus is that it's at the South Street Seaport which was a neat area for shopping (chains). There are some restaurants there but nothing really stuck out as a place I would deliberately choose to dine at.

Are you sure you want to take a taxi to Canal Street? It might be better (and less aggravating) to take a subway. You could walk to the N/R/Q and take that to Canal Street. Just a thought. Also, if they want to look at upscale shopping, they should check out Barney's, Bergdorf's and Bendel's--all within walking distance and possibly more interesting than Macy's or Bloomie's (though the Soho outpost of Bloomie's is quite nice, too).

I know that's a good idea....but I'm really scared of doing the subway! I had no problem with the Metro in DC and my husband and I did the subway last time in NYC...but with 3 gals, I don't know. I will consider it, though, as I dislike NY taxis almost as much!

NYC subway is fine...safe (even for teen age girls), fast, convenient. I thought I would never, ever take the subway when we moved to NYC, but now I take it all the time. Even better than taxis during rush hour, or pre-theatre. Taxi to China Town is not a good idea, the traffic there is beyond terrible. I thik the girls will think the subway is an adventure.

My 19 year old niece, who lived in the city while attending a summer session at NYU, liked Serendipity (UES) for frozen hot chocolate, among other things. She also told us about the Cosi chain -- great for good sandwiches at reasonable prices.

I hope that when you go to Bloomie's, you know to go across the street to Dylan's Candy Bar!
Another good place for clothes shopping on the East Side is Lester's, on 2nd Ave. and 80th Street, if you venture up that way. We went there recently on the recommendation of my teenage niece (as a consolation for our Florida trip cancelled during the Jet Blue February debacle), and I have since seen it in NY Magazine as the "trendy" store to go to.

sorry, me again, just thought of another evening activity. Chicago City Limits, an improv troupe that is based in a small nightclub setting near the theater district. Warning: it has some off-color moments, given the live nature of improv, but we have gone twice with our kids and they love it.
It is a small venue, with a small audience, so there is alot of opportunity for everyone to get their improv suggestions performed. IF you go, they have a skit where they base it on a recent event in an audience member's life, and both times, our suggestion was picked, and I have to say it was priceless! Try to speak out first on this one!!
my daughter saw Rent on a friend's birthday, and I am now taking her back for a second time. It's displaced Wicked as her favorite. I'm with you: not my choice, but I hope I like it!!

You'll be fine on the subway. I have been on subway systems in SF, Paris, and London and was hesitant about riding NYC one because when I was in high school we used it and it was disgusting. Well, it’s better now than it was then - it’s not super clean but it IS safe and it's so convenient. We use it a lot now and even dragged my parents (in their 70's) on and they had no issues with it.
If you know where you want to go to/from ask for directions here, people have been extremely generous to me with subway directions, or you can use the trip planner on the MTA website. http://travel.mtanyct.info/

We went to NYC in January and ate at Madarin Court in China Town. It was really good and had tons of dim sum. It's at Mott and Canal (61 Mott). Try to walk up Broadway - there are tons of great stores. From Canal you could also walk North up Mulberry and go through Little Italy. Take the subway - a one-day pass costs (i think) $7 and you can ride the subway anywhere you want. It's easy. We only got lost once, but you just get off and get on the train going the opposite direction. You all are going to have so much fun. I want to go back!
