Most Popular/Sold Out Broadway musicals?

As far as obtaining tickets for popular broadway shows this Spring....what are the most popular musicals....Gypsy, Miracle Worker, Urban Cowboy?? Are Hairspray, The Producers tickets still hard to come by? Isn't ebay.com still the best way to get tickets for sold out shows? (this is what has worked for me in the past but I've been out of touch with Broadway)Thanks!

If you are planning to see some shows this Spring, why not check www.playbill.com, www.broadwaybox.com and the various other websites where you can purchase tickets at deep discounts?

How hard tickets are to come by and how much you pay for them depends upon the show and your dates, along with how far in advance you purchase tickets.

If you haven't seen the "popular" shows yet, why not select among them? They were, at one time, the "most" popular, and today's "most" popular will be replaced with new shows. Shows that don't remain "popular" close.

Hairspray, producers, lion king and mamma mia area still propular but you can still get tickets (though ticketmaster or the box office) if you plan a few months ahead. You're not going to get 10th row center orchestra seats but you can usually get something decent. weekends tend to be the busiest but a week night you may also have a better chance. I just bought 4 tix for a wed. night in June for hairspray (center front mezz). My guess is gypsy will be popular but I doubt Miracle Worker will (since it's not a musical), and I don't know much about Urban cowboy but my gut feeling is that's not going to be that big of a hit. I've never done the Ebay thing and am not one to pay above face value for any tickets but I suppose tickets could be found on ebay.

Just to get an idea of availability go to ticketmaster or telecharge.com and check availability for particular dates. Also, as djkbooks says, there are many advance sale discounts available (but never for the really popular shows). Other websites to check for discounts are www.hitshowclub.com, theatermania.com and http://www.entertainment-link.com/ca...?parent_id=115 (I just stumbled upon this one today and it looks good).

You've taught me something! Never thought about ebay for tickets. One way to determine what's NOT hard to get is by going to Playbill.com-join their club (for free) & see what discounts they're offering. (None of the ones you mentioned are on offer there) Hairspray is still hot as is Mamamia.

Hairspray is still the hottest ticket, followed by The Lion King. Though not totally selling out, The Producers and Mamma Mia are still doing very well. Urban Cowboy, which opens soon has not been doing much business in previews, and tickets are easy to come by right now. Of course, if it gets rave reviews, that'll change!
The revivals of Gypsy and Nine will probably do well, but tickets for both are available.
Movin' Out and La Boheme are doing okay, but not selling out. And, interestingly, Chicago's business has risen dramatically since the movie came out.

Mclaurie, I too do not want to pay more than face value for tickets. I've been VERY fortunate getting great seats at equal or less than face value on ebay.com It seems there are always people selling extra tickets due to trip cancellations/relationship break ups or whatever reason who just want to unload them and get something. Make sure you check their feedback ratings before buying. I also bought tickets to see Celine Dion's new show (A NEW DAY) in Las Vegas next month the same way and paid exactly face value plus the cost of mailing. Also, don't buy a ticket unless the seller gives you the specific section, isle and seat number! You don't want some pig in a poke.

Oh, also will mention that even though Miracle Worker isn't a musical it may be very popular because it stars Hilary Swank who is an oscar winner and the original Miracle Worker won many awards including the best play award many years ago. It seems that when there's a big star in a production it is usually quite popular, now to keep the popularity it must be very good as well....guess the big stars just help get it off it's feet. As with Gypsy, it stars Bernadette Peters....need I say more...

Two weeks ago we got front mezzanine for Nine and Hairspray for the end of May. Not my first choice, but they appear to be good seats and I was thrilled to get them. I also got tickets for Long Day's Journey Into Night, not a musical, but the one that I really had hoped to see.

Tele-charge is a pleasure to deal with on the phone, especially since they are open 24/7. Call as late at night as you can, they are three hours ahead of us, so they are not usually busy when I call, and I don't have to wait, and patiently they go through various dates until I get the best seats. We also got tickets for The Play What I Wrote... PLEASE, PLEASE let that be another Liam Neeson secret guest appearance, and Hank Williams: Lost Highway.

As the dates get closer, I will check out Off and Off Off Broadway to see what is running.

Does anyone know how long Exonorated will run? We'd like to see that also.

Got this email from Playbill.com today. Don't know if run is thru May 20 or just special offer til then.

"Through May 20, tickets are now only $35 (originally $60-55). See THE EXONERATED with your family or give a memorable gift that will be remembered and talked about for a long time to come. See it Tuesdays through Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 5PM and 9PM, Sundays at 3PM and 7 PM. Cast members over the next six weeks include Jill Clayburgh, Richard Masur, Frank McCourt, Kristin Davis, Marlo Thomas, Peter Boyle, Jill Clayburgh, Mia Farrow, Jeff Goldblum, Robert Vaughn, Ben Vereen, and more! To order tickets, call Ticketmaster at 212-307-4100 and mention code JPBE4, or visit http://www.ticketmaster.com, and use this code: JPBE4. Or print out this email and bring it to 45 Bleecker Theater.

mclaurie.... I got that email from Playbill last night and ordered my tickets today. The email said that the $35 rate was good until May 20, but when I called, they said that the offer was good through May 31. Our seats would have been $60 each.

We will be at the 5:00PM performance on Saturday, May 24. Since we will be getting out at 7:30PM, any suggestions for restaurants in the area. I guess it would be best to make reservations for a Saturday, inside of just dropping in?? I am going to do a separate post on that.

We also got our Hank Williams seats the other day after getting an email discount from Playbill. That disproves the theory that 'you can't get something for nothing'.

May I ask how you know what the face value of a ticket is? Will Playbill, for example tell you if you ask?

If the Playbill offer doesn't list the full price of the tickets, it will at least mention either the % of the discount and/or the amount you will save.

Urban Cowboy bombed and has closed. Shortest run of any Broadway Play at only 4 nights.

You're not up on the latest news, GoTravel. The producers of Urban Cowboy decided last night to keep the show going.

Why would you extend a show that is so bad that it ran for just four performances prior to the shut down AND got horrible reviews?!?! Friends saw it on opening night and they kept laughing that it was all too "Springtime for Hitler"esque. It was that bad.

Who knows but an article in today's New York Newday confirms the above info. Following Saturday nights curtain call, director Lonny Price announced the closing notice had been taken down but it was unknown how long the show will run.

Two possible explanations for the Urban Cowboy "rescutation" (sp?):
1. They are hoping for some Tony award nominations (due in a few weeks), which might attract ticket-buyers.
2. There is some talk of sending the show out on the road, where it might receive a warmer reception than in NY. And, obviously, a run longer than 4 performances would make it more attractive (relative speaking)!

Howard, I'm hoping you know the answer to this...after reading that Urban Cowboy closed here on Fodors I contacted telecharge and a representative (don't have his name) confirmed that Saturday night's performance was the last. He gave me an address to return my tickets which I put in the mail Saturday. NOW...they say it is reinstated but I've already changed my plans to visit NYC (was using ff tickets and was able to change the date of travel) and the tickets are in route back to telecharge...I wish they'd make up their mind! Will telecharge still refund my credit card since they're the one who told me to return them? Unfortunately, none of this was documented on their end or mine. I have no use for these Urban Cowboy tickets anymore. Any opinions?
