Montgomery Center, VT-Foliage Trip-Suggestions

After talking about doing this for years we're finally going to pack ourselves and the dog off to this part of Vermont for several nights in late September 2011.

Have reservations at a well-recommended pet-friendly B+B and now wondering if anyone has been to the area and can recommend any particular things to see and do.

Of course, the leaves alone will be worth it I am certain and after many years of seeing pictures I am finally going to be within driving distance of East Corinth (long story and won't bore you with details).

Any suggestions would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with Montgomery Center, but this is a very rural part of a rural state - a wonderful place to relax and explore the countryside. Obvious activities would include hiking, biking, and leaf peeping. Of course there's Ben and Jerry's near Waterbury. If you run into a rainy day, the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury is fun. Burlington is a very beautiful little city, with lots of good places to eat. If you're willing to cross the border (brush up on your French!), Magog Quebec is a very pleasant little lakeside resort town with some interesting restaurants and great bike trails. There is also a cluster of wineries centered around Dunham Quebec, and the abbey at Saint Benoit du Lac is extremely beautiful.

Zootsi,
Thanks so much for replying and for those thoughtful suggestions. The trip will be an opportunity to chill out amidst some quiet scenery/surroundings.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Check out the foliage hot line when you actually arrive to find out where the peak foliage is. I agree with Zootsi that the Eastern Township area of Quebec has a lot to offer. In the northeast Kingdom of Vermont (Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties) there are many beautiful drives. Lake Willoughby is especially scenic. (But there are more good food options in Quebec0

Route 100 is a beautiful drive.
Montgomery is known as the town of 7 covered bridges. I have never gotten out of the car to really explore them, but you should have time to do that if you are staying in town.

If you see a church supper with chicken pie, these are a tradition during foliage season. The food is usually good

Yes, I knew about the covered bridges and interested in that. Have done parts of Rte 100 in the distant past and am anxious to do pretty much the entire length this time around (and even though we will do this segment on a Friday am prepared for lots of other visitors and traffic).

Thanks very much for the rec re church suppers which i thyink is always worth a stop.

The Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth Notch is a beautiful spot right off of Rte 100. There is a good cheese factory there, too.
