Monterey to Big Sur

Can Big Sur be done on a day trip? will be staying in Monterey for 3 nights, would love to visit there, also read in another post that you can go whale watching I will be there 05-31-06 for 3 nights, is it true? thank you.

It can definitely be done in a day. We did it in the middle of a heavy winter storm to go see the elephant seals just north of Hearst Castle. But if you want to take a tour of Hearst Castle, you must leave early.

Hearst Castle is at the "southern" entrance of Big Sur.

There should still be whales to see. We have a family picnic on the beach at Aptos every year in early May and almost every year we spot at least one whale from shore. There are several charters you can take from Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey.
