Microtel Inn - BWI airport
Will be staying in Baltimore for 1 night. Found an excellent rate at this hotel. Does anyone know anything about it? What about the area, is it safe? How far to the Inner Harbor?

I have stayed in Microtels (Seaside Oregon, Tampa Fla, Orlando Fla.)
Most of them are within a few years old.
Secure, clean, and minimal amenities.
Would recommend. Remind me of "business" hotels in Japan.
Cannot comment of area in BWI.

BWI is about 10 miles from the Inner Harbor.
The Airport area is a safe area. Not sure where exactly the Microtel Inn is located.
Priceline lists it as a 2-Star.
Are you staying near the airport because you are flying out early in the morning? You could probably get a nice place at the Inner Harbor thru Priceline.

I've never used Priceline and am a little skeptical of getting a hotel in a less than desirable area - my daughter and I travel alone. We would love to stay at the Inner Harbor, but I'm not willing to pay the prices I have seen. Someone I know who travels to Baltimore occassionally suggested the BWI area because she feels safe there. She said some of the areas between BWI and the Inner Harbor appear to be risky. If I bid on a hotel room in the Inner Harbor area can I be fairly certain it will be in a safe part of town?

I don't know how much you are paying, but on Priceline, the Microtel is going for $35-40, and a 3-Star at the Inner Harbor for about $45-55, and 4-Star $55-65.
Go to biddingfortravel.com, do some quick homework, and go for it.

Are you coming to Baltimore en route to somewhere else, or is the point of the trip to see Baltimore?
If you're out at the airport, which is about 10 miles south of the city, you'll have to deal with transportation to and fro, which is easy if you're right at the airport, but can't say how easy it is from the hotels.
The area between the airport and the city is pretty much BW Parkway, until you get within the city limits, and then it's a bit industrial until you're right downtown. If you're driving into the city, it is a straight shot with little chance of wandering off into some "risky" area.
The areas around the airport are safe by virtue of the fact that there's nothing around but parking lots, hotels and some office complexes.
The area around the Inner Harbour is pretty safe and is patrolled by the Downtown Partnership's safety patrols. There are usually plenty of people out and about, so that helps a lot.

mlm,
If this is for a one nite stay, it's a perfect time to try Priceline (albeit the traffic concerns mentioned above).
A 4* in the Inner Harbor can probably be had for under $70 and that would be my first recommendation (assuming it's in your budget). You've already seen the rates these hotels typically go for, so you know you'd be getting a good deal. Most people hesitate to use Priceline the first time, but once they due, they're usually hooked!
BetterBidding.com also has a list of hotels that others have received and lots of tips about how Priceline works. Hotwire, also covered there, may be an option for you as well as it offers a little more control.

If you opt for Priceline and stick to 4 star in the Inner Harbor or Waterfront area you'll be in a safe spot with plenty of other tourists around.
Microtel is my favorite budget chain but be aware that most (possibly all) of their rooms have one queen bed only - no kings or doubles. If you add in the $20 or so per day for Inner Harbor area parking and the inconvenience of driving in and out of downtown.... PL seems to be the best chice. Checl www.betterbidding.com for PL and Hotwire info and www.biddingfortravel.com for PL info.

There is a few hotels in the BWI area + the lightrail runs from BWI to Camden yards/convention ctr which is 2 blocks from Inner Harbor. Light Rail is what? 1.50 one way? Try hotels.com
hotels near BWI =
Comfort Suites Bwi Airport
Holiday Inn Express
SPRINGHILL SUITES by MARRIOTT
Amerisuites Baltimore B.W.I.
Fairfield Inn By Marriott
Candlewood Suites Bwi Airport
most of those are close to BWI and have hotel shuttles. BWI is a safe area.
