Member of party not going now. Will her unused ticket come back and haunt us?
This may be a silly question, but I just thought about it because I know airlines cancel remaining legs of itineraries if flights are not used.....
Four airline tickets were purchased together in one transaction. Now, one of them is no longer going to go. She knows that she has lost her money on the ticket. That isn't the issue.
My question is this: since her ticket will not be used, is there a possibility that the airline will cancel the RETURN portion for the other three of us? It is an "e-ticket" with one confirmation number for all four tickets.
Surely the ticket agent at the airport will notate when just the three of us check in that the fourth ticket is not going to be used and to not cancel the other three....
Should I make a concerted effort at the check-in counter to make this clear? Or am I getting nervous over nothing.
Thanks in advance.
Keith

I would call the airline and ask to cancel one ticket and keep the unused money for another trip within a year, this is usually what the airlines do.
For that member just not to show up at the airport is not an option - she'll jeopardise everybody else's trip. I'm sure your group is not the first one when only 1 person is cancelling, they know how to deal with it.

Not silly....Jeez, silly is on the board to da as always but not this one.Which airline? Call and tell them "she" isnt going.Normally the ticket is good for a year from date of issue. And if is one of the discount carriers, another traveller may be able to use teh remaining funds in the ticket.Might not be a total loss, but wont hurt to have everything in order befaore getting to the airport. When you call the airline, the airline will "split" her off the PNR, cancel the itinerary and give you instructions on what to do from there. That way the others' itineraries will not be jeopardized.Hope this helps!

This is a very convoluted issue....
My nephew is in NYC recovering from very serious surgery. His grandmother (my mother), his aunt (my sister), his cousin (my neice) and myself have booked tickets to go see him the weekend of July 29.
Considering the severity of the operation, we really didn't consider the possibility that he would not be in the hospital the weekend we were to fly up.
Now we are being told that he MAY be released from the hospital sometime next week and be able to come home. Which is great news.
But they don't know for sure yet.
I searched high and low for the cheapest airfare I could find and found it, believe it or not, using expedia.com. I tried all the individual airline sites, changing departure airports (ATL, BHM, HSV) and flying into any of the three NYC airports but was unable to find cheaper fare. This was Monday.
Here's the rub: We fly from ATL to LGA on American. We return EWR to ATL on Delta. Two different airlines, two different airports.
So, at the moment, if my nephew is still in the hospital the weekend of July 29, nothing changes. We fly up as planned.
BUT, if he has come home by then, my mother is not going to go to NYC. But my sister, neice and myself plan on changing the trip from a hospital visit to a NYC visit.
But we will not know how this is going to pan out until sometime next week....
Mom said she doesn't mind losing the money on the ticket (well, she minds, but not enough to take the flight). But I am concerned about our return flights being cancelled..... but since it is an entirely different airline, will they even know?
Thanks again,
Keith

Keith...If Mom does NOT go,and her reservations are NOT cancelled prior to the scheduled departure, she WILL lose all the money she paid for the ticket. The BEST thing to do is cancel her ticket if she is NOT going, regardless of this week, next week, whenever as long as it is before she was scheduled to travel. Then you three go and dont worry about anything else.Don't let Mom be a "No Show", airlines hate that even if the ticket is forfeited.Call and cancel.Hope this helps.

In this case, call Expedia and ask, if one member won't go, how to cancel her ticket only but don't cancel yet. And during the conversation, ask kinda as a joke, what if she's a no-show? Will the rest have problems?

Even if all booked under the same e-tickets, you all have individual names under which the seats are booked.
Cancel mom - she'll probably get a credit to use within a year. The rest of you will get tickets/boarding passes in your names and you fly to NYC on American and return from EWR on Delta. Easy!

Beachboi gave an important advise on his 4:55pm reply - split her reservation off the PNR. Do it for each airline. This way, she can fly and she can not fly. No need to worry about the rest at the last minute.

Thanks everyone for the tips.
It turns out that my nephew will have to remain in NYC for another two weeks of Physical Therapy, so everyone, inclucing my mother, will be going to NYC this weekend to see him.
He has been released from HSS/Presbyterian with near miraculous results and they are staying at the guest suits connected with the hospital.
I did see on another thread that you pay considerably more for the taxi ride to Newark over the taxi ride from LGW, so I am considering hiring a car from the Call-7 folks when we leave next Tuesday.
Thanks again for your advice.
