Kapalua is the golfing capital of the islands. 3 of the best courses. Hope that golfing is in your plans. There's a Ritz Carlton next door to the Kapalua Bay. Some good resturants- Roy's in Kahana,The one at the Plantation golf course club house and then lots in Lahaina (15 minutes away).

Aloha David,
Kapalua Bay Hotel is situated on Kapalua Bay which has been voted by Conde Nast Taveller as one of the best beaches in the world. It is very gentle surf, showers and restrooms, great snorkeling, beach rentlas and snacks and beverages all right there. The Hotel itself just underwent a major refurbishing and was closed for a few months. They have finally reopened just a few weeks ago. I believe that they put in all new carpeting, furnishings and linens. So you can be sure that all is new and nice. I am sure you will have a great time there in December.
Best Wishes and Aloha, Kay

ALOHA! Will be staying at the Marriott's on Maui & Kauai the end of January 98'. Can someone give me light packing tips for a woman... tired of overpacking! Any thought on the Marriott's? Would love a REALLY GOOD FOOD restaurant recommendation for each island. Also, how to attend a "non-touristy" luau. Any suggestions for snorkeling or any other fun activity or places to see. I have a few books, including Fodor's Hawaii planner, but would love input from those who have already experienced these two beautiful islands! Thank you!

For Maureen:
I do not know the Marriott in Maui, but Marriott Kaui , I feel, would not be the best choice.
1st although it is considered Deluxe, I don't feel that it is....rooms are very small and very "Marriott" in furnishings, Resort is nice but nothing special.
2nd and probably the biggest problem it has is that it really is not near anything other than the Airport. It is not down on the sunny side of the island. It is not up in the often cloudy but beautiful side of the Island. It is rather in the middle and not convenient to anywhere.
I would choose two Hotels in Kaui, one up around Princeville for a couple of days, and then one in Popui for a couple of days...that would give you the best of everything.
Packing: As one who usually packs 3 suitcases for a week stay, I have learned to pack only one when going to Hawaii.
All you need are bathingsuits, shorts, slacks or sundresses for evening and sandals. It is VERY casual even at the finest Resorts and Restaurants.

Kauai- Marriott is a beautiful property. Used to be a Weston B4 Iniki. 3 real good resturants- A Pacific Cafe, Roy's (down near Poipu Beach), and the Beach House(best sunset).
Maui- Marriott is in te middle of Kaanapali. Nice hotel , large rooms, great beach . We've stayed there on each of our 6 trips to Hawaii. Restaurants - Roy's in Kahana, the restaurant at the club house at the Plantation Golf Course in Kapalua. Pineapple Hill in Kapalua is hit or miss. Have had great meals and some not so great. In Lahaina, there are some good restuarants.
