Long-Term Stay Hotel in NYC

My parents will be coming in to town (NYC) mid-November and staying for about a month (yea, yea, I know, that's why they can't stay with me ). Anyway, I need to book them, ASAP, a very nice, long-term stay hotel room (one bedroom suite preferably)with a kitchen (this is a MUST). Looking for something in midtown (East Side) or Upper East is fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!! Are you familiar with a place in the East 50s on Third, I believe? I remember seeing an ad for it in the NY Times -- it has an indoor pool on the roof. I think it starts with a "C". Is this ringing a bell?

Try a Google search, "Corporate apartments+New York". Lots to pick from.

Also, Hotel Michaelangelo in theater district does some long term rental apartments.

Thanks, TC. Yes, I did Google it but I really was looking for personal experience/recommendations.

www.affinia.com We've stayed in the Beekman, and Murray Hill Suites, they have several more. They should cut a really good deal for a month-long stay, and the one-bedroom apt is quite nice.

I think the place you're thinking of with the pool is the Kimberly. Other choices midtown -

east 50s
the San Carlos newly renovated,
Plaza 50 (also may be newly renovated. part of the affinia group of all suite hotels.)
The Benjamin (affinia)
The Alex (maybe too trendy)

west 50s
Salisbury
Carnegie Suites

Lyden Gardens in the 60s and the Surrey on 76th are also affinia. Go to affiniahotels.com for all of their properties. Lastminutetravel.com had recently had very low rates for some of the affinia hotels. There are also a few places in Murray Hill (Murray Hill east suites and affinia's shelburne)

Michelle, there are some good options here, but we rented for a month at a wonderful place -- Allen House at the corner of 71st and 3rd. It's above Grace's Market and has an entrance next to Grace's Trattoria. There is no website, but stop by or look it up in the phone book -- I can't put my fingers on the information right now. They have about a dozen beautifully decorated and fully furnished apartments there available for one month or longer rentals.

I'm also fond of the Executive Rentals mentioned above that are actually part of the same old Taft Hotel that the Michelangelo is in, with a separate entrance right next door. You can get a one bedroom there for around $3000 a month -- but they don't begin to offer what the Allen House does in my opinion.

Thanks, Patrick! I was hoping you would respond. If I may ask, what are the rates for the Allen House? I've been making some phone calls to various places and have been quoted rates from $4900 to $7500!! Waaaay too much. I was hoping to keep it in the much more affordable $3000-3700 range.

Well, it's been three years since we stayed there and I think we paid $4200 then for a wonderful one bedroom. I assume it's more now.

By the way, if you're still interested, I found the information -- funny, how should I have thought to look in my file cabinet under "New York apartments"? Our apartment was #3K, and I noted that I liked #2F which had an extra half bath, even more.

Their number is 212-794-1110. Actual address is 201 East 71st Street. Marian O'Dwyer was the manager. Hope she's still there, she was a delight.

Do be aware also that as strictly an apartment, there is no tax there. Apartment hotels still add that 15% or whatever tax on top, I believe.

EXCELLENT point, Patrick!
Do corp lodging places charge all the extra fees and taxes... the ones that are in addition to the 15%?

The executive rental place next to Michelangelo said "no taxes". The key is if they also operate as a hotel, I guess, or strictly offer apartment rentals. I know when we talked to both the San Carlos and the Kimberly as well as some of the others, they all said tax was extra. In California when you rent even at a hotel for over 30 days the tax is dropped, but I don't think that happens in New York.

By the way, the people we talked with at 150 West 51st Street, next to the Michelangelo, was Empire State Properties. The building itself (or that part of the building) is called Executive Plaza Condominium. They have a rental office right in the building and showed us three apartments, all individually owned, but managed and rented by them. I guess that's different from the sites or companies listed above. That's the place we plan to go next time -- hopefully early next summer. www.empirestateproperties.com

Michelle: Check out the Sutton Hotel on E. 56th Street between 1st and 2nd. Probably out of your price range, but you can't beat the location and amenities. Even if you don't have your parents stay there, check out their great Italian restaurant Valentino's with live big band music 6 nights a week.

Small world Patrick. I could never remember the name of the place on 71 st. I visited someone who was staying there while being treated at Sloane Kettering. The apt decor (can't remember the number) was very theatrical with great tropical murals painted on the walls (maybe with monkeys?). Michelle, it's an older building so nothing flash from the outside but nicely done inside. A good residential area with lots of services.

Yes, Laurie, all the apartments at The Allen House are different. The owners (Mr. and Mrs. Alan Allen, can you believe?) keep a designer friend busy there. As long term "rent control" renters die off (literally) the owners of the building turn their apartments into these short to long term rentals. While the decor varies, all are really well done. Ours was very Ralph Lauren, with mainly his furniture and fabrics, dark green walls, deep red hand marbelized walls in the large foyer, and a spectacular mural like border painted in the kitchen. There was a whole wall of shelves in the living room filled with stuff including a large collection of wild teapots. The decorators had never removed the price tags -- and they were marked from $150 to over $350 each. There was also a large closet filled with wonderful towels, one per person per day, and they changed them weekly!

I don't know anything about it, but I think the place you were trying to think of with a C might be the Cosmopolitan.
