We will be visiting the area in November and would like to be near Prospect Park, around the Park Slope area.

Can anyone suggest a bed and breakfast (or a hotel?) We are trying to avoid staying in Manhattan as we did upon our previous visits to NYC. Our niece now lives near Park Slope.

Thanks for any good advice.

The Holiday Inn isn't a glamorous brand, but it is right in Park Slope!

I know there's also at least one b&b here in Park Slope, but don't know any by name. The largest hotel in western Brooklyn is the Marriott downtown, just a few subway stops away from Park Slope...

There are reviews for both on tripadvisor and both are somewhat mixed. The first place looks much nicer.

I think mclaurie's first link is the B&B I have heard about, in "the heart of Park Slope" on Prospect Park West and 6th Street. (But I don't know anyone who has stayed there.)

The second isn't actually in Park Slope; it's just over the line into Prospect Heights. If your niece lives at the north end of Park Slope, this location would be appropriate as it is just off Flatbush Avenue near 7th Ave. (I don't know anyone who has stayed there, either, but I can say that the neighborhood is fine in that area.)

The Inn on Prospect Park is an option, between 6th and 7th on Prospect Park W.
Also, cannot find much on the Inn actually on 6th....still checking this one out.
Another option for us might be the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge which looks like it has pretty easy subway access (and is less expensive - but, not close like we might still prefer.)
Will take some time to also check out the Marriott in "downtown", too.

We have this same problem when visiting our daughter, who is just off 5th Avenue on Carroll Street in Park Slope. Options we have tried include: a chain hotel (I think it might have been a Days Inn) further south, around 35th St, an apartment from someone on craigslist right around the corner from dd on 5th ave, and hotels downtown or in village, near the R subway stop. We have not yet tried the new Holiday Inn Express, around 4th Ave and Union--those small rooms typical of cheaper New York hotels I find hard to bear. We are going to try something just opened called the Park Slope Inn, a privately run place offering a garden apt and private rooms with baths but not services, that we saw on craigslist--will post upon return, in early November

And, looking forward to Brooklyn ! After so many visits to NYC itself for museums and restaurants, this trip we will pretty much anchor "over the bridge" and enjoy.

Park Slope has a ton of great restaurants, especially along 5th Ave. Do a search here or on nymag.com for some suggestions. (La Villa is great for pizza.) Smith Street also has great restaurants, and DUMBO sports a few, too, plus Jacques Torres' famous chocolate shop and equally famous hot chocolate (a must in November!).

P.S. Marriott Brooklyn Bridge and "Marriott downtown" that I mentioned earlier are one and the same. Not really a picturesque part of town, though as you said it sits on top of the F line subway and so is easy to get to Park Slope from there...

Just back from 3 nights at the Park Slope Inn, a newly remodeled brownstone on 4th St at 5th Ave being run as a small inn. You pick up your key on arrival and proprietor is available by cell phone if you have any problems during your stay. I understand there are a few rooms, each with a private bath, but we opted for the garden suite ($180 per night vs $140 for the rooms). The space was a few steps down with its own entrance, about 700 sq ft, with French doors into a private yard in the back. Brand new, nice queen-sized bed, good decorating, nice couch and chair with ottoman in the living area, which has a full kitchen (we didn't use it, with all the wonderful dining options within walking distance). Small but adequate bath. Good hot water, toasty warm, and just a very nice place to stay.

Cons: a little noisy when people walked over head. There was a door to the basement which couldn't be locked from the inside of the apartment, which seemed a little odd. I might not have wanted to stay here by myself, though the neighborhood is lovely, etc., just because that door worried me a little.

The subway is a few blocks away, on 4th Ave at 9th St, the R line, but you can easily get to Manhattan, or switch to other lines at Atlantic Avenue, a few stops north.
