Las Vegas to San Francisco in October - best route

We are driving from Las Vegas to San Fran with our two teenage sons and are wondering the most interesting route to take in October. We have allowed two nights en route so would appreciate any info regarding "must stop off" places of interest and also where to stop and find accommodation (motor inn or motel/hotel). We are returning to Santa Monica from San Francisco after this trip and will do this via the Pacific highway. Boys aren't too interested in long hikes or camping so will give that a miss on this trip - any other suggestions welcome please.

The scenic route is through Death Valley, up the eastern Sierra Nevada, and over Tioga Pass: http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tiogaopen.htm

If Tioga Pass is not open, there is no scenic route.

Once over the pass you could decide if you have the time or inclination to explore Historic Highway 49 on your way to San Francisco: http://www.historichwy49.com/home.html

Pray there isn't an early snow (though we desperately need it). Then one night on the east side of the Sierra (Lone Pine/Mammoth/etc) and one night in Yosemite Valley (book NOW!). If nothing is available in the Valley, then book at Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal.

If there is early snow and Tioga Pass is closed - you are screwed
