Hey everyone! I have never used Fodor's U.S. boards, although I am an at-least-daily visitor to the Europe boards. I am hoping that all you folks will be as generous with your information, opinions and insights as the European board contributors! I am traveling to Omaha, Nebraska next week on business (leaving Sunday). My questions are as follows - Is there anything to do there?! Is there anything interesting to see? Are there any good restaurants? Is Omaha known for any particular food (I think of steak, and corn)? Is there a downtown area with restaurants, clubs, shopping, etc.? What are the "happening" spots to hang out in at night? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!

I was in Omaha about five years ago and was pleasantly surprised. It has a nice downtown area along the river with a good varitey of bars, restaurants and shopping.

I don't remember any names in particular but I'm sure you won't have difficulty finding it. Omaha is the telecommunications hub for America so it is fairly cosmopolitan for a small city.

I think there's also a good art museum. The middle of the midwest holds lots of good surprises. Have a nice time.

I frequent Omaha often and it has a lot to offer. The Henry Dorly Zoo is one of the best in the nation. We enjoy the Omaha Broadway theater. Also the College World Series is held in Omaha. The dinning is nothing to be overlooked. There are great resturants in the Old Market downtown. If your looking for steaks and corn, you have come to the right place, but there are many other resturants that have various menus to offer you whatever you like. There are three good malls for your shopping needs also. But wait! Don't miss the Joslyn Art Museum and well thats about all. I personally love Omaha for all it's worth and would recommend a family vacation to Omaha any day, but a weekend would probably be a better idea.

I recall reading a Nat'l Geographic article about Omaha a while back which said that it is a hub of telemarketting.
If you run into any of the telemarketers, tell them not to bother calling me; I'm not gonna buy anything from any of them!

Apparently nobody's finding anything to suggest re:restaurants, etc., and I won't be much help but suggest you check through a net-search, e.g., w/Yahoo yellow pages or MAYBE Zagat's reached there, though I doubt it.

But I want to tell you the most memorable part of a couple of different visits to in-laws there: the Union Pacific museum. It's a real peak into the era that built the country and more interesting than you'd think -- for example, it used to be the custom to build hotels next to train stations, and these were often the most elegant buildings in a city -- and the UP museum has some items and pictures from their hotel in Omaha.

Don't miss the Old Market area!!! THE best resturants in town and the best overall atmosphere! Some of the many reaturants to try would be M's Pub, Omaha Prime, The Brass Grille to just name a few. Much to see and do in this area of town. Grat bars there to including Barry O's.
