Is New Orleans safe for 23 yr old girl
My daughter 23 and a friend are going to New Orleans this coming weekend staying at the W French Quarter, I've heard that the area is so dangerous....True or not

I'm sorry, but a lot of times it is what your 23-year-old DOES in NO that can make it dangerous. Now, you can get pissy about this if you want but when I lived in the city that part of town was not inherently "dangerous."

She should ask in her hotel where it is safe to go and where not - there are some dangerous areas near the French quarter. But the posters above are correct - most of her safety depends on her using her city smarts:
Always being aware of her surroundings and peole who may be watching her
Not walking in areas without plenty of people
Never leaving a drink alone (roofies are everywhere) or take one from a stranger
NEVER let go of her purse/money - even for a second
Do not put her phone down anywhere - many are grabbed of tables in bar or restaurants when someone turns away for an instant
Girls should stay together

Moms have to worry. My wife worries about our "kids", who have families of their own.
You have been given a ton of good advice and realistic, if not soothing, comfort above.
I'm going to take a slightly different tack.
A 23yo is not, or should not be, a "girl". There are young women her age who are serving in the military in Afghanistan and elsewhere, working in operating rooms in life or death situations, and participating on teams that have significant bottom line impacts on their employers.
Young women do in fact make dumb social decisions, but they get wiser more quickly than young men seem to do. As long as she doesn't have a long record of doing dumb things, she should be fine, especially if she follows nytraveler's excellent advice.
At the same time, I don't see anything it all wrong with you having a talk with her about your concerns. Bad things sometimes do happen to nice people, and even if she says, "Oooooh, motherrrrr" I think she will appreciate your loving concern and perhaps remember at an important time.

Obvious common sense advice everyone, of course its what the person does most of the time that puts them in danger. I had heard of armed robberies in crowded restaurants at lunch time that makes me worried but with the state of the world that could happen at anytime. No she does not have a history of doing dumb things and ironically Ackislander she does work in an Operating Room in a trauma center as a nurse so that should also make her more cautious.

Yeah, where did you hear about armed robberies in restaurants at lunch time? I've never heard of anything like that in any neighborhood where tourists will go.
I have no qualms about wandering around alone in the FQ, Fauburg Marigny, CBD, Magazine Street, and many areas Upton during the day. At night, I stick to well-traveled places when walking and take a taxi if at all unsure.

Yes but I would second november_moon's advice - if they are going to be walking, especially late at night, they should stick to the well populated places (some of the side streets off Bourbon can get a little desolate very late at night/early morning). And they should try not to get too drunk.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -
The bartender at Buffa's Lounge and Restaurant on Esplanade is still shaken.
Monday, just before 10 p.m., he was tending to a table when two masked men wielding guns barged in.
“When the two gentlemen came in, it's hard to remember the words but it was pretty much, everybody down. They said, we have guns,” said the bartender.
Shouting at the bar patrons, one of the gunmen approached a couple sitting at the bar.
Co-owner, Jarret Rogers, tells FOX 8 the gunmen began robbing his customer.
“He was using the gun to push a patrons head to the bar, and he got his wallet,” Rogers said.
“After that, the other one came over towards the bar and demanded that I open the register,” the bartender said.
After taking the money, the gunmen rant out. No one was hurt, but the bartender is in shock.
“It's still kind of a blur. Just the power they had with that weapon and you don't think about that. I just wanted to make sure everyone was Ok. I'm shaking just being in here right now, and I come here every day. It's just pretty scary when you look at the barrel of a gun. You don't think about it. You see it on T. V., but it's different when it's in your face,” the bartender said.
Jarret Rogers says there has never been an armed robbery like this at the bar, but he is aware of the crime that seems to be creeping into the neighborhood.
“We actually had somebody a couple of weeks ago, walking down Esplanade and they got mugged,” Rogers said.
He fears crime will continue unless something is done to stop it, but he struggles to find a solution.
“We do what we can to get the damage to a minimum,” Rogers said.
“We're trying as bartenders to text each other when we're leaving shifts, and get together in groups. It's tough to do, but we are doing the best we can to communicate with each other,” the bartender said.
As they vow to remain vigilant, frustration is certainly growing among those who live and work in the area.
I THOUGHT IT WAS LUNCH TIME BUT ACTUALLY I STILL DO, I'LL LOOK FOR THAT ONE

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating another armed robbery that took place just before 10 p.m. last night (Jan. 5) at Buffa's Bar & Restaurant on the outskirts of the French Quarter. Owners of the bar say a few workers are still shaken. ANOTHER IS THE WORD, THERE ARE MORE

"ANOTHER IS THE WORD, THERE ARE MORE"
" I had heard of armed robberies in crowded restaurants at lunch time that makes me worried but with the state of the world that could happen at anytime."
I don't think there are "more" "armed robberies in crowded restaurants at lunch time".
Your daughter works "in an Operating Room in a trauma center as a nurse" and "does not have a history of doing dumb things". She's not a "23 year old girl". She's a grown woman and capable of traveling to New Orleans or other cities.

This event occurred at 10 pm (not lunch) in a bar (not crowded restaurant) on the EDGE of the French quarter.
Hence the needed to stay IN the quarter in heavily populated places - and my note that there are dangerous areas nearby.
