My friend and I are going to Letterkenney Ireland over this summer (2011) i was wondering if there were things to do for 18 year olds and if it was safe?

Sorry, I had a bit of "brain freeze" there. I was thinking of Kilkenny, not Letterkenny. Since Letterkenny is in Northern Ireland, you should post on the United Kingdom forum. (But you do sometimes see things about Northern Ireland on the Ireland forum.)

It depends on how well you handle your booze.
Most young North Americans, left alone, are puzzled by the prevailing attitude to drinking in the British Isles. Some turn into prissy old women as a result: some others just can't handlle it and find themselves with alcohol-related problems.
Otherwise: the youth of Letterkenny don't spend their lives doing nothing. The confusion among some posters about which country it's in comes from the fact that its regional capital (Derry, in the UK) is a lot easier to get to than any substantial town in the Republic, and that's where most people go for a good night out (apart from anything else, booze is usually cheaper in the UK).
There's no border formalities of any sort any more, and most people in the area think in both currencies automatically
Though Strabane (also in the UK) is nearer than Derry, it's a dump:the social highpoint of the week always seemed the day the unemployed went to the post office to collect their dole.
For safety: Road traffic accidents are slightly higher throughout Ireland than elsewhere. Weather-related dangers don't exist. Conventional crime, apart from tax scams and protection rackets and the like run by terrorist groups (which don't impact visitors' lives in any way), on either side of the border, is almost non-existent.
The subhuman filth that still believes in exterminating Protestants, though sadly still getting some help from the Republic side of the border, don't carry out violence (except on anti-Protestant bigots they disagree with) on the Republic side. From time to time, they DO manage to plant bombs, especially near police stations, in Derry or Belfast. These haven't hurt any civilians that I can recall for years, and there's a well-understood drill if one's discovered (do EXACTLY what the police tell you and keep calm).
If you're American, EVERYWHERE in Ireland is a great deal safer than in your own country.

Belfastbound, are you visiting relatives in Letterkenny? I personally think there are nicer spots in Donegal as Letterkenny is more a commercial town. It is safe for 18 year olds but if you could tell us what you want to do we could advise you better.
