We will be visiting relatives in Los Angeles in July with a 10 yr. old Grandaughter. Will be with the LA relatives 4 nights and plan a trip for two more days to another location not too many hrs. from LA. Thought of Solvang, but have read some negative reports. What is there is Santa Barbara?, we will have been to the beach in LA. Our we are looking for any ideas for children in this vicinity. (Or perhaps a 2 day trip ANOTHER direction from Los Angeles that a child would enjoy, South, East, or perhaps Long Beach, Catalina Island etc)???

A 10 year old would enjoy Legoland and Sea World in San Diego.
There is plenty to do right in LA. The fabulous zoo, Universal Tour, day trip to Disney or Knotts Berry Farm, the beach, The Natural History Museum or the Petersen Auto Museum or The Museum of Science and Industry.
You would enjoy the Getty (reservations needed on weekdays) and there is a child's section too.
You could do a day trip up to Santa Barbara because the drive is lovely, but its mostly attractive for the beach and the lifestyle (California's Riviera).
An overnight or two at Big Bear Lake would be nice if you're not from an area with lakes & mountains and she hasn't had that experience.

clarkgriswold is right-- there will be plenty to do in the LA metro area. Other than the vast multitude of theme parks (Legoland is fun and some 90 minutes south of LA in Carlsbad-- and there's a good high-end outlet mall nearby, also in Carlsbad), the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach (30-40 minutes south of west LA) is a great facility, and a three-minute drive away from the Queen Mary-- worth a visit, and with some good restaurants right on board. The Catalina Express boat terminal is next to the Queen Mary, and Catalina Island is great for a day trip. However, you may want to save that for another trip; you can definitely fill six days in LA.
Solvang is hokey, but great as a one-to-two hour rest stop between LA and San Luis Obispo. But no more. Santa Barbara is lovely, but there's really nothing of major interest to kids other than the beach. Which is really pretty.

If you do end up in Solvang, check out nearby Ostrich Land . . . It's just a one room store and bunch of ostriches and emus on a ranch, but if you're from the east, like me, it's a switch from seeing cows and horses!

The Santa Barbara Zoo ( http://www.santabarbarazoo.org/ ) might be of interest to your 10 year old. It's cozy and very clean. You can get much closer to the animals as compared to other local zoos.
