Husband REALLY wants to see Key West. Got a few questions before I dig in!

We have two round trip tickets "any time, any place" USA to be used by Nov. 6th, 2009.

Husband has been bugging me for a few years about seeing Key West, so I figure,
fly into Key West, it's an expensive ticket into that airport, use our free tickets.
(we gave up our seats on a short flight, ...3 hours at the airport= 2 free tickets)

What I would like:

See some of "old florida", see some of the Keys. Enjoy a beach, sunsets.
Vacation time: one week

Should we fly into Miami and drive down or fly right into Key West and save
that long drive? Take a few day trips and the rest of the time relax and
see Key West? We are NOT B&B types, like a nice pool, hotel ammenities.

1. advice on flying into Key West or Miami and driving
2. is Key Largo something to see?
3. if we flew into Miami and drive down, should we stop in Key Largo
for a night? or another location that is "special"?
4. Any advice on Key West hotels.

This is why I keep going back to Hawaii, I know how to get around
and know what I am looking for!

If it were up to me, I would save the money and go to Kauai!.
I guess my husband should get his pick every now and then! Ha.

I love Hawaii for the ambiance, the spirit and the beauty. I don't want
to be disappointed by the Keys. We have been to South Beach and
Fort Lauderdale, but it was in our "salad days". Now, mama like to
roll a bit bigger!. LOL (that means, I like nicer places) ha

Thanks for any advice, thoughts! I need a trip planner in the form
of an experinced Fodoite!

Don't have a lot of time now to elaborate...but Key West and Hawaii are totally different. Hawaii is "Polenysian", Key West is funky. You have to experience it once. The town gathers at the pier for sunset and has as major party. Very offbeat...not at all fancy! But worth a trip.

Where are you coming from, mama? And when are you thinking of going? Whereas Kauai is great year round, Key West has its seasons. It's a great place to go if you love fishing, are a little kinky, or gay. There's also some interesting history there and a trip out to Fort Jefferson is very memorable.

Your husband may like to go in late October when they have Fantasy Fest. You might too but, then, I don't know you that well.

Fly into Key West. The drive down from Miami is very long. Nothing worth seeing in Key Largo. I am a Kauai fan too. Key West is totally different. It doesn't have good beaches. Or the scenic beauty. The whole point of going to Key West is to have fun in the funky downtown--lots of fun bars, music, restaurants, and shops. I loved Key West for the night time party in the street atmosphere. That's the main draw, so don't even try to compare it to hawaii. Just go and let your husband have a really fun time.

I agree not at all like Hawaii, we did not opt for the drive
we stayed in May 08 at the Marquesa Hotel
LOVED IT!!
I was close to the funky downtown( have a few drinks and walk to hotel) but was elegant for my hubby who prefers that scene
GREAT MUSIC beautful sunsets
Would go back tomorrow!

The keys are coral and virtually all the beaches there are man-made and tiny. So it's definitely not a beach destination.

I agree with the others to fly directly in. The drive from Miami down is at least 4 hours, mostly on a two lane highway. If you should get behind an accident, you could be stalled for hours.

The current "darling" of hotels in Key West is the Gardens Hotel. I've never stayed there but have walked by many times...it gets rave reviews. gardenshotel.com

If you prefer being on the water, as we do, consider the Ocean Key Resort oceankey.com or the Pier House pierhouse.com. These are side-by-side in wonderful locations on the Gulf. The Ocean Key is next to Mallory Square, where nightly sunset celebrations are held.

All these places are at the upper end of the pricing spectrum, but there are lots of other accommodation options, including some very popular B&Bs and guest houses.

I'm curious to know when you're thinking of going, because as someone who suffers when humidity is high, I can't fathom Key West in the summer...late May is about as uncomfortable as I want to be and we don't go back until late October. As for Fantasy Fest, I would NOT advise you to go during that time unless you're someone who'd love Mardi Gras. It's the same crowded, drunken atmosphere, and one day is about all I can stand.

On the south in of the beach there is the Southernmost chain of hotels/inns/B&B. The Southernmost on the Beach has beach views and an amazing pool. The Dewey House and La Mer Hotel are smaller and right on a small beach. We stayed at the Dewey house once when it was just DH and I as no kids are allowed and felt very pampered. Here is a link to the resorts:
http://www.southernmostresorts.com
You can walk from here to all the action on Duval Street and to Mallory Square and then go back to your room and have beautiful scenery and relative quiet.

Also in Key West, Fort Zachary Taylor has the best beach. You access it through the Truman Annex, and after you have done the sunset show at Mallory Square, the sunset at Fort Zachary Taylor is just as beautiful but without the crowds.

There are a lot of historic houses, museums etc in Key West, but as the other posters have implied people mainly go there for the 'funky' nightlife.

Strongly disagree with recommendations against driving, esp if you are interested in "Old Florida." The drive is extremely interesting, with much "Old Florida" atmosphere (I lived in Florida as a child in the 1950's and know my pink and green). You may not like it, but it is Old Florida.

That said, Key Largo isn't very interesting unless you want to reef dive. Islamorada is better looking and has a fabulous French restaurant, Chanticleer, and lodging at every price point. Good charter fishing opportunities if that is an interest.

Get a good map, not the one from the car rental place, and follow some of the side roads, particularly those NOT marked with signs for attractions. You will find interesting local spots and some delicious crowd-free beaches that no one is particularly interested in your knowing about.

It also helps to read up a bit on the history so you know what you are seeing and why it is the way it is.

You have gotten good advice on Key West, but I would add that you should inquire into what are called "Cuban Groceries." Some of these grocery/lunch spots date back the the turn of the 20th century and offer terrific take out lunches, both Cuban sandwiches and hot dishes, at very inexpensive prices. Because they are in the neighborhoods rather than the tourist district, they are not frequented by visitors, though they are easily walkable.

The Truman White House is worth a visit to see how simply our leaders lived before they became royalty.

If you're not in a hurry, and you enjoy a "road trip" the drive to KW can be fun... there's some great stops along the way..... too many people nowadays are in a hurry to get to places... I remember family roadtrips in the 60's where the funny weird things along the way were better than the final destination.... when the family gets together now, its all about the stinky car, or the funky reststop...

I say drive... it's part of the Keys Magic, so are the Hotels like Marquesa, Garden or any number of places... resist the chains... grab some local grub... count the Dolphin and Manatee mailboxes along the way... you're in the Keys man, and if you treat it like everyday rush... you'll certainly miss the whole point of the Keys.... and the stinky car!!!

Love both Kauai and Key West! Lots of great outdoor activities at both destinations. There is great fishing/watersports with a number of the boat operators in Key West. I love the Ocean Key Resort - one of the cutest, boutique hotels with a caribbean feel next to Mallory Square. You won't be disappointed. The staff is top notch and rooms are beautiful! Beautiful pool, too!

I agree with most of what's been said... but here might be some things to think about. Regarding flying straight into Key West, that is the most convenient option (especially if you have a free ticket), and it was my first inclination to suggest you do that. However, you've got a full week, and although some stretches from Miami to Key West are definitely not scenic, a LOT of it is an absolutely beautiful drive. I've lived in South Florida my whole life and still never get tired of driving down to the Keys, over all those bridges looking at the beautiful turquoise water, birds, sailboats, scenery, etc. I really think it's part of the experience. You could consider staying overnight in Islamorada if you're interested in doing a fishing or boating trip (as was mentioned). I think doing the drive and stopping along the way will give you more of the "flavor" of the Keys as a whole. Just a thought. Also, there's a beautiful, very wide beach at Bahia Honda State Park, great to do a quick visit or snorkel, etc.

As others have said, you need to set your expectations right for the Keys -- it is NOT Hawaii! But it's fun and has its own charm... wooden house with porches and paddle fans, offbeat locals, funky shops, great seafood, and there are tons of fun activities to do if you like to be in or on the water -- take a sailboat cruise at sunset, rent waverunners or small boats, etc. Don't miss the Hemmingway and Audobon Houses if you like Florida History.

I'll say one more thing: like you, I'm NOT a B&B person. EXCEPT when I'm in Key West, seriously! You might not even think of them B&Bs since they're more like small hotels... all the amenities plus many have pools that are private to the property, beautifully taken care of, gardens, many places have a cocktail hour at the pool, etc. I think this is a much better option than the larger resort-style hotels... gives you all the comfort yet also the character and feel of Key West.

wow! Lots of great information! Sounds like quite the
adventure. Thanks everyone for your great ideas. I will
start looking at all the lodging options.

I will be flying from the mid-west. We have high humidity here, and I assumed it would be pretty hot and sticky in south Florida in the fall. Fantasy Fest sounds like too many people.

Husband and I do like the journey to the destination. You never know what you're going to find.

Thanks!

We went a couple of years ago . . drove to Key Largo and spent one nite there . . found the original "African Queen" that was used in the movie next to the Holiday Inn. It is used for dinner cruses now.

We took our time driving to Key West stoping in Islamorado for lunch. Stayed at the Conch Inn B&B in Key West . . a little off the main street but close to everything. Rode both the tram and the train as well as rented scooters one day. Took in the Sunset at the pier but there was not enough clouds to be spectacular . . unusual I am told.

We enjoyed the drive down and back almost as much as the stay in KW . . we stopped at almost every wide place in the road.

Traffic was very light both ways for us ( February ) but have heard horror stories about traffic jams

Definitely fly into Key West. Then if you want to rent a car and explore the other keys on the way to Miami, or the Everglades, etc. then do so at your leisure. But that way you aren't trapped into having to do the drive if it doesn't strike you as fun.

Gosh, I am now 50/50 on the drive! I think since it's expensive to fly INTO key west and we have a free ticket, we will just go direct the first time. Second trip, we'll fly into Miami.

The Southernmost hotel looks perfect. Has anyone stayed there? The rates are good for the location. Love the bike and moped rental on site. They've open 80 new rooms, which look wonderful!

This gives you an idea of how Key West is laid out with a few suggestions of what is available at one end, the other, and in between...

Oh, and for a first trip, since there is so much to see and do (and eat and drink) in Key West, I'd fly all the way in and out, take a cab to where ever you stay and take advantage of the fact that you can walk everywhere.

Beachkomer,

I haven't stayed at the Southernmost Hotel, but have stayed twice at the Southernmost on the Beach and once at the Dewey House, all part of the same complex. The Southernmost is the most reasonable option of the complex and we know people who have stayed there and like it.

We have flown into Key West and driven. If I am short on time I like to fly into Key West. If I have time, and I mean time no hurries at all, I thoroughly enjoy the drive down. We always find something new and interesting even though we have been making the drive since the late 70s.
