Hubbardton, VT?
Hello, Vermont experts: my husband and I (early 40s, like hiking, kayaking, cheese and beer) are looking to rent a house in the Green Mountain State in early September. We found a couple of places that look promising in Hubbardton, but I can't seem to find out much about the town. IS there a town? Any info about the area would be great. Thanks very much.

I thought I lived in a small town! Population less than 800. This is a very nice area. It looks pretty close to Brandon which is a nice, artsy small town. More of a drive to Middlebury which is a great college town. You aren't that far from Rutland which is a city. We've camped nearby and enjoyed the area.

It is a very small town. I have only visited to see the Revolutionary War battlefield historic site

I honestly don't remember the town at all, but it is a pretty area with a nice lake. You would definitely have to go to a larger town for restaurants.
As noted in the last post Middlebury is a nice town to explore. Castleton also has a state college and some interesting architecture. Their Colonial Day, with house tours, is Sept. 25 this year

There are lots of easy day trips you could take in Vt or NY.

Beebe Pond is very small and quiet. There are not many "camps" on it, unlike Lake Bomoseen (much larger) and Lake Hortonia (very weedy), which are in the Castleton/Hubbarton area. Hubbarton really does not have a town center. The main claim to fame is the Hubbarton Battle Ground, site of a Revolutionary War battle in July 1777. In fact there is a re-enactment there every year in early July. Castleton and Fair Haven are the closest towns. Brandon and Middlebury (Middlebury College) are within 30-40 minutes.
The Hubbarton area is lovely, and perfect if all you are seeking is peace and quiet. If you are looking for more activity, you might check out www.vermontproperties.com for other ideas. Lake Dunmore is a very nice lake between Brandon and Middlebury. It is lively in the summer, and the cottages and year-round homes can be quite close together, but after Labor Day things quiet down considerably.
Let me know if you need additional help!
