How to visit Kodiak Island for viewing fishing bears
We visited Alaska nearly 5 years back ... Now we are planning to go again ... Last time we had heard about the Kodiak Island where it is a treat to watch the bears come down to the river for salmon fishing .. Could not pursue that last time ... Would love to do it this time if it is feasible ... I could not find anything on this forum for that island ... Would really appreciate if someone could help with the following questions ..
- is it worth it as an experience? Is it truly as great as it is made out to be?
- What is the best season for the bears to be down there? Is early June good?
- best cheapest way to get to Kodian island?
- Is it recommended to stay overnight? Is yes, where?
Thanks a lot

In Kodiak, I think it is tricky to see bears, at least compared to Katmai.
I was in Kodiak a few days this past summer and did some escorted hiking and driving near rivers to see if any bears were about in late June. Didn't see any. My bear viewing was done in Katmai, flying from Kodiak with Andrews Airways. They do day trips. I went with John Rogers' Katmai Coastal Bear Viewing, and stayed on their boat. I'm going back in 2010.
I think the place to get the answers to your questions is:
Mary Stephenson of Kodiak Adventures

I had some trips around Kodiak lined up with her that had to be cancelled due to weather.
You must keep weather in mind and book some extra days in case you can't fly in or fly out of Kodiak. That's how I got there--flying from Anchorage. There are a couple of flights per day between Kodiak and Anchorage.
If it is bear viewing you're interested in, there are some other threads on that.
Hope you include Kodiak in your plans.

Was back in Kodiak recently and this time got to do a variety of outstanding wildlife and nature activities from hiking to wildlife boat cruises to kayaking. Even saw 2 bears on Kodiak.
I am so impressed with Kodiak as a wildlife destination and the ability to safely experience that wildlife up close.
A full report is coming, but here are some contacts of people/companies I used and enjoyed.

Mary had a variety of KODIAK bear trips. I did not take these and managed to see some bears anyway.
To respond to the question of early June for bears in Kodiak, I would say the odds are far less than late July into Sept.
