How to pack for Alaskan Cruise

It's been awhile, but we went on a cruise in August and our travel agent told us to take clothes for layering. While in the Inside Passage you are on water and it was quiet chilly, and damp, of course. I wore jeans, knee socks, hiking boots and turtle necks and sweaters while outside watching. And on some of the shore trips too. We even had sleet on day! After we hit land and were on the bus and train, you didn't have to dress quite so warm. Just remember that the water will make it seem colder than it is. Have a great time. It's a wonderful trip.

I went to Alaska on a cruise on August 13 - 20th a few years ago. We sailed from Vancouver through the inside passage to Skagway, Juneau and ketchikan. It was quite cold and we were wearing jeans, jackets and gloves for several of the days. Be prepared for cold temps. It is magnificent though.

We were on an Alaskan cruise a couple of years ago in Sept. Maybe the weather will be warmer in May but when we were there, it was freezing. We wore down jackets and gloves. We took a float trip thru an eagle preserve and we froze even though we were bundled up. But it was worth it!

Layering is good. We visited in August so that was warm enough for sports sandals on land but it was very windy on the outdoor decks. Don't forget a hat and gloves. I got an inexpensive rain jacket at LL Beans Outlet that was perfect. Light weight with a hood that zippered into the collar. Under that I wore a polar fleece jacket. The zipper went all the way up so the collar can be worn like a turtle neck. If you don't like hats, you might pick a polar fleece head band to keep your ears warm. Jeans aren't very warm, I wore chinos. I wore socks with my sports sandals some of the time but in May you might wear hiking boots most of the time. What I got was low cut like a shoe but with tread and design like a hiking boot. Waterproof soles. I doubt if it will be warm enough for shorts. Don't forget binnoculars. We also used a small back pack. Have a great time!
