How is the road between Kapalua and the Olivine Pools?

Does the road become narrow and one-way when driving from Kapalua to the Olivine Pools? If so, for about what distance? (MinnieNo1 mentioned a narrow 8 mile one-way section but I don't know where it starts). And if we turn back at the Pools and head west again, is there much of a drop-off on the outside lane?

No one has answered so I'll try tho' it's going by memory from three years ago. If I remember right it doesn't get super narrow until you start to descend into Kahakuloa & valley, the road down there and up out of it is narrow with drop offs. further east it gets narrow too tho' not with big drop offs. So, if you go to the pools then turn around back to Kapalua I think you'll be at ease. BTW, be careful at the pools, someone was washed away & drowned just last week.
Have a great trip.

I have not driven/ridden on this road yet, but family members (in their 70's) gave it a try last month. At a certain point, early on, they ran into a sign that said *tourists..go home!* This made them think about the possibility of car problems, i.e., in an area that maybe wasn't too friendly to tourists. At their age and considering the narrowness of the road in places, they turned back.... Friends of ours have driven it, found it *scary exciting* and were glad they went.

When (if) you make it to Kahakuloa, be sure to stop in and visit Auntie Uluani Ho`opi`i and buy some shave ice. And while you are there, you might want to also purchase on of her husband's cds. Uncle Richard Ho`opi`i is one of Maui's great treasures, and, along with his brother Solomon has performed at the Smithsonian and has been honored as recipients of the recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. If you stop and visit Auntie Ululani, Uncle Richard will be glad to come out and chat with you and even sign a cd.

This drive is beautiful and well worth it. I like it better than the road to Hana. We found it narrow enough to feel the need to honk going around curves for a short section. Their are some pretty big drop-offs (fatal if you tumbled off, I'm sure). I see no need to turn around and go back. Loop on around and keep going. Visit Iao Valley, etc.
