Honeymoon

Hi

My honeymoon is July next year and I'm thinking about USA (I'm from the UK). Looking for places that perhaps aren't as 'touristy' as Florida etc and have heard that the Carolinas are beautiful.
Would people reccomend it for a Honeymoon destination? If so - what towns and hotels are particularly nice for a honeymoon?

Thanks

Martin

The Carolinas are beautiful, especially for a romantic honeymoon. Email me privately and I'll give you lots of info, too much to list here. [email protected]

Well, how about the Asheville NC area? Full of genteel Southern charm, lots to see and do, and probably not nearly as muggy as in less-hilly areas-- isn't it?

Of course, I'd be inclined to suggest a restful hideaway somewhere on the California coast-- Santa Barbara, or Carmel-by-the-Sea, or La Jolla, or Laguna Beach, or Newport Beach, etc....

If you want to go to the southeast and don't mind the heat, also look at Savannah, Ga. Close to the ocean and Charleston. If you do decide on CA, also consider Wine Country (Napa and Sonoma).

IMO, if you stay on the beach, heat and humidity is not an issue. The beaches near Charleston (Isle of Palms or Folly Beach) would be my choices.

However, if you really don't want heat, and are more of an active vacationer than a beach-lounger, I would head to Asheville, which will be cooler, although it is still summer! Asheville is a great town, but in order to find it interesting for a week or more, you would need to be taking advantage of the outdoor activities available in the surrounding mountains, e.g. hiking, biking, rafting.

Lots of wonderful romantic choices in Charleston. I strongly recommend the Planters Inn for a night. It is gorgeous and very romantic.

I would also suggest Charleston and/or Savannah, repeating the warning that it will be very hot and muggy, even with an ocean breeze. While Asheville is nice, it doesn't seem enough of a destination to me, espcially for honeymooners from overseas; ditto for the Outer Banks. Forget about Myrtle Beach.
The Florida Keys aren't touristy like Orlando and Disney are, but it will be truly, truly hot down there in July.
This is a tough one! Would you consider going way north, to Maine, for instance? The weather would be perfect...
CA would be my preference, but getting there would add a lot of travel time, so it makes sense to stick to the East Coast.

Have you and your fiance ever been to the U.S. before? How long do you plan to be here?

I agree that Charleston and Savannah are very romantic, but depending on the type of traveler you are, I would say it might get a little slow at either place after three or four days. I'm assuming you'd be here for at least a week.

If you have the time and the budget, I'd recommend a drive along coastal California--there are many threads about Big Sur, Moneterey, Santa Barbara. Wine country, north of San Francisco, is fantastic as well and also very romantic as well. If you've never been to San Fran, it's the most beautiful large city in the U.S., and has natural beauty, great restaurants, lots of history and cultural/arts events, and neighborhoods to walk around.

Then again, there is always Hawaii, which is a long haul from the UK but completely fail-safe as a honeymoon destination. Good luck!

Hi

Thanks for the help
We'll be in the US for a fortnight - looking to combine a 4 day 'city break' with 10 days in a relaxing resort
Thinking at the moment of 4 days in New York and 10 in Naples.
Still up for discussion though!!

California was our 1st choice, but it's double the travelling time and we're also finding it really hard to get good deals on flights there compared to the East Coast

Thanks

Martin

Sounds OK, although 10 days in Naples might be a bit of a stretch.... Maybe a few more days in NYC?

California shouldn't be ruled out just yet; airfares can fluctuate quite a bit in ten months. If you do find good airfare, remember to focus on coastal areas. In the northern part of the state, San Francisco can be touristy, but done right it can be a classy, super-romantic honeymoon destination. Monterey and Carmel are also great. San José is OK for a day trip (the Tech Museum is that city's best attraction by far), but romantic it ain't (it's a corporate center with a pretty good arts scene but spotty nightlife).

In southern CA, Santa Barbara is pricey and lovely, Santa Monica has hustle and bustle and just that hint of Hollywood glitz. Hermosa and Redondo Beaches are more laid-back, with a young, hip vibe. Farther south, Huntington Beach is Surf City-- fun, young, maybe a bit raucous. Newport Beach is ritzy, maybe a bit stuffy. Laguna Beach is gorgeous, artsy, a bit bohemian. Then there's San Diego and its breathtaking La Jolla neighborhood....

However, since you'll already have NYC as the highlight of your trip, staying out east is best. I stand by my recommendation of Asheville, although you might cut it to 4 or 5 nights.... If you like golf, maybe Hilton Head...?

Whoops-- moot point, isn't it? Another thread indicates you've set your honeymoon itinerary already. And it sounds really good. Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials!

10 days in Naples is a loooong time.
Maybe throw in a drive to the Keys, north up the Gulf Coast or even over to Miami?

Ditto on avoiding Myrtle Beach like the plague! You're impression of the Carolinas should be better than that!

How 'bout San Diego for the city and Catalina Island for the relaxing part? Definitely keep working on CA. I love San Francisco and like others have suggested, you can work that with Carmel or Wine Country.

As for Naples, I lived in Florida for years and July is not fun. Is the west coast much more comfortable than the east coast?

Again, "Jaredson", moot point-- they've settled on an east coast honeymoon. They're not coming to CA-- GAME OVER.

[Funny how the first half of your post is, word-for-word, the exact post by "Chilin" that was deleted by the Fodors editors, isn't it...? And I repeat: San Francisco will be as touristy as you make it. It is also much more beautiful and romantic than San José.]

How about New England?

Beaches, mountains, smaller cities, quaint towns, mansions, farms, etc.

Coastal Maine and Nantucket are very romantic.

What kind of sights do you want to see? Do you want beaches? A city? What is your price range? How long are you staying for?

The East Coast is a wonderful place for a honeymoon. Nantucket and the islands are very romantic. Destin, Fla area has beautiful beaches - white soft sand. The Carolinas have several places on the beach. The Charleston area is great. Lot of beaches on small islands with wonderful resorts. Charleston is a great little town with very romantic Inns and yummy restaurants.Georgia has Greyfield Inn on it's own island -this is where John Kennedy, JR was married(I think). Beautiful beaches and a great Inn. Also don't eliminate the Florida Keys. The Hilton has a great little place on it's own island off Key West- very small with great beach. Have fun researching.
