Hey leaf peepers! Foliage colors expected to be good this year in NE...
I know lots of folks like to come to New England to see the amazing fall foliage. Here's news:
A report on the radio yesterday (in CT) said that whoever tracks these things (DEP?) has high expectations for a very colorful fall. I think the report focused on Connecticut, but results are likely to be similar in the rest of New England. It's our reward for a cool and rainy summer...
Peak time in northern CT is usually just after Columbus Day, but it's very weather dependent, of course.

It's true - up here in southern Vermont the colors are really just beginning to blossom now and you can see they're rich and vibrant, unlike the last couple years where the early yellows went to brown almost instantly and the reds suffered too.
Those of you lucky enough to spend some time in New England this fall will enjoy a really spectacular show! Let's hope for dry, crisp weather too with skies that hue of blue that only seems to happen this time of year and the sparkle of frost and the magic of morning valley fog.
This is one of the best places on the planet to live! (I will speak differently come February and another oil bill - for now I am intoxicated by autumn!)

It figures that northern New England is starting to peak now. After being up in Maine the end of Sept. and the first weekend in Oct. in previous years, this year we're heading up mid Oct. With our luck, we'll miss it! I know the last time we were up, people were saying it was late that year.

This sounds good. We will be in Portland, Maine, Sept 30 - Oct 5, sounds like we'll be seeing great color!
not too soon? not too late? Never been to Portland, ME (Only Boston & NYC), but, we here NEW ENGLAND color is not like anything we've ever seen. (and it can be absolutely beautiful in Minnesota)

Northern New England (well, Northern VT anyway) IS NOT starting to peak now. The foliage is just starting. Another week and a half and it should be great in the the North/Central part of VT. For Vermont, see: http://www.vermontvacation.com/seasons/report.asp for the latest foliage reports, coming from State foresters.

The news today predicted peak colors for coastal and southern NH to be around mid-Oct. Why do all of you coming for the long weekend keep insisting that you'll "miss it?" It's actually even prettier when some of the leaves have fallen and there's a beautiful mosaic carpet of color. Being negative won't adjust the foliage!

Dreamer2, you've just made my day. Now, I hope I don't have my hopes too high! I had planned to go a last weekend, even though I knew it would be too soon for the folliage, but had to reschedule, due to surgery. So, this will be my first venture out in a while. And, while it's not as 'exotic' as my trips to Europe, it's every bit as appealing, because it has so many beautiful, tranquil spots. The fall follliage will just be a bonus. Other trips I tried to plan for it. This one was 'just because' I love New England in general, and Maine in particular, and was looking for someplace within a relatively easy distance that would help me heal. For me, the Maine coastline, particularly from Boothbay to Bar Harbor, fits the bill.

One more anecdote about timing a trip for foliage -- it's so unpredictable because of weather and other imponderables.
Last year we drove from CT to Quebec City on 9/26, the last weekend in September (loved it!) Leaves were just starting to turn in extreme northern Vermont. By the time we drove back four days later, color was up to about 30% at higher elevations, and just starting in mid-Vermont. Pretty speedy transition, we thought...
