Hi. My husband and I are looking for a two to three night getaway in the adirondacks...I know that is a HUGE area, but here is what we are looking for. Just had a baby last year so we are hoping to have some alone-time, but only for a few days...

We would love to be within 3-4 hours of NYC - beauty, seclusion, tranquility, and luxury are all important...meaning, we are not really interested in doing the "roughing it" thing right now. A place with GOOD food either on the premises or nearby is also a selling point. And not someplace like Lake George, which I feel is way to touristy. We are hoping to go at some point in July/August - won't have to be a weekend, we could do mid-week.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated...thanks so much in advance.

Well - four hours by car from NYC will get you just near the very southern end of the Adirondacks - the largest area is up more towards Canada - more like 5 or 6 hours.

Also - most places are not luxury - but more towards the family/casuale end of things.

A friend spent some time at the Sagamore - on an island in Lake George - but not near the town - and liked it - but it's rustic luxury - not big city type. Not sure you'll find any modern/big city luxury in the Adirondacks.

Thanks for the quick response! Actually, I guess I should clarify luxury: I don't mean upscale NYC accomodations - I mean more of the clean, pretty, non-motel, non-campground feel. Any input would be great...thanks again. And yes, we could do 5 hours from NYC - I just want to make it worthwhile if we are only going for two or three nights.

PS - Vermont would be great too!! I think part of the state are relatively close to NYC, right?

What a great idea to get away for a few quiet days. My friends from Saratoga Springs who just had a baby 6 months ago recently spent three days in Mirror Lake Inn and loved it. Very relaxing for both of them. They also did some hiking. I don't know what you mean by upscale NYC accommodations. I lived in Manhattan but still don't know what you have in mind. So it's hard to recommend but check these two options. It would be easier to recommend if you said how much you are willing to spend per night

It is a 5 hour drive from mid-town Manhattan to Lake Placid.

I would discourage you from coming to the Lake Placid area around July 20, it is going to be very busy because of the Ironman. Also if you want a quiet relaxing get away then avoid Saratoga Springs because of horse races I think they start around July 27.

Thanks so much, I will definitely check these out this evening! I think we would be willing to spend up to $250/night? I think we are most interested in location (either having a good resto on site or a few options within walking distance), hiking trails closeby, and of course natural beauty. Many thanks for your suggestions - we don't need luxury, but we would like someplace cute and warm.

The Point, I think, now it is something like $2000 per night. On the other hand Mirror Lake Inn would be an ideal place for relaxation or you may be as active as you wish. I bet you would be happy with this choice, many visitors are. Try to read reviews for Mirror Lake Inn. Location with its natural beauty, restaurants, Main Street within walking distance, hiking trails in every direction within a short drive, walking path around Mirror Lake (2.7 mile long), entertaining 1 hour boat tour on Lake Placid just a few minutes away, even a gourmet restaurant, Interlaken Inn, is a few minutes walk from Mirror Lake Inn. Farther, driving on I-87 from the city is going to be relaxing once you pass Lake George. Take exit 30 and route 73 to Lake Placid and include a few scenic stops along this road. I hope you are going to have a fantastic get away. If you are able to I suggest coming during a week. Many visitors from Montreal spend weekends in the area.

Although I've never been there, Elk Lake Lodge seems to be well thought of. It is close enough to I-87 to make the drive bearable. A private lake so no powerboats or jet skis. You dine at the lodge.

Have you considered the Catskills?
We just returned from a 4 night stay in Windham and had a very nice time.
We stayed at The Hotel Vienna www.thehotelvienna.com
and it was very nice.
We have stayed at The Sagamore 2 years ago and enjoyed it while The Hotel Vienna is not in the same league we enjoyed it very much.We will be returning later this summer.

I've been to Elk Lake Lodge and it is a solid thumbs down. It is gross. Really gross. On top of that the management sux. (Can you tell I had a really bad stay there once? LOL)


Adirondacks will be tough to get reservations anyplace decent right now. Mid-week should give you a little advantage. You could try Friends Lake Inn (very nice) maybe. Fern Lodge might be nice to, I haven't been there, but it has mixed reviews on Tripadvisor (one good review, one bad).

Frankly, if I wasn't into doing outdoorsy stuff like hiking or kayaking I guess I'd go to Vermont instead of the Adirondacks, simply because there are more places to stay and eat.

But go somewhere - you'll love the break!

I agree about Vermont being more civilized vs. the Adirondacks. I even heard that they have a lake there too.

That must be why I prefer the Adks.
