Hawaii with kiddo
I am planning a summer trip for myself and my 8 year old son...leaning towards Maui, specifically the Hyatt resort there but wonder if there's more to do on the Big Island.....will he miss not swimming with dolphins or seeing a typical volcano?? Or is there more than enough on Maui to make this a memorable trip. I want this to be something he never forgets! (also want to be sure and stay at a resort that has a kid's club so he can play with other kids and give me a chance to go snorkeling and stuff) Any input is appreciated!

I don't know about the resort but Maui most definitely has plenty to see and do to make a memorable trip!! It's not a live volcano with flowing lava, but Haleakala is amazing. It would be my pick for a 1st trip with a kid over BI.

Please don't patronize the dolphin swims. They animals are basically circus performers and have been captured in a cruel manner and deprived of their basic social structures.
Stay on Maui. He'll never forget the beaches, the snorkeling, the fish.

I would also recommend Maui. I've stayed at the Hyatt twice and love it. It's a great resort for kids - they have a great pool complex that he will love.
For a really fun snorkeling trip on Maui, check out Trilogy's tour to Molokini.

Actually, you can do all of that on the Big Island, too.
I agree about the dolphins. At least in Kona, on the Big Island, they take you out in a boat to where dolphins swim and you can get in the water if you want to. When I see the dolphins at the Marriot at Waikoloa it makes me want to cry.
There is a real volcano crater which is spewing steam right now on the BI. And lava erupts from cracks in the volcano sometimes, although you can't go near it. Plus, if it is still open, a small crater where you can walk across the floor of it!! (Kilauea Iki). Check with the US Parks to see if it is still open. Also an old lava tube you can walk through for about 1/4 mile in the rain forest on the volcano. Snorkeling is excellent too.
But Maui is excellent.
