Hamptons hotel help- BESTplace to stay?

We are planning on going to East hampton for my birthday in August. We'll be leaving our toddler with my inlaws, so this is a special trip and we want to make the most of it. I've narrowed my search to the following:Mill House Inn, baker house 1660, 1770 and East Hampton Pointe Inn. Which is the Best of the best? and why? TIA!

For some reason, I cannot find my other post -- couldn't find it at all, so re=posted the question. Thanks so much for responding-- I was hoping you would as you seem to be in the know re the Hamptons. All of them are pretty much around the same price-- very expensive. EHPI is prob my last choice b/c of location. From what i can tell on their websites, Baker house looks like it has the best grounds- with the pool and spa, but the rooms at the 1770 house look really nice. I just want to make sure they are all pretty much in the same category and for that kind of $$ i want to make sure we're getting the best. Any further insights would be appreciated-- thanks mclaurie!

By clicking your screen name you will find all your previous posts down the left column.

Hard to believe they're all the same price. All I can guarantee is that unfortunately they'll all likely feel overpriced. With so few lodging options these places pretty much charge what they like. Baker House does have magnificent grounds but you're right, the rooms at 1770 House look surprisingly lovely. I say surprising b/c from the outside, the building doesn't look very impressive. There aren't very many reviews of these places on tripadvisor and many are not recent, but the recent ones on Mill House Inn are a bit scary.

I was surprised b/c I'd heard it was very nice.

I think it is b/w 1770 and Baker House and I'd agree based on the photos, the rooms at 1770 look nicer but the grounds and the place of Baker House is much more impressive. Wish I could help more. I might be able to stop by tomorrow and look at rooms if you want.

You are so nice -- thank you, but i don't want to impose--we'll prob end up going with baker. That's good info about the grounds of 1770 not being so great--- that would be important to my DH. But to spend over 600 for a small room (the one we're looking at at Baker) even if the grounds are nice would annoy him too!

By saying that they are all basically the same price, they all range in the $600 and above range. I had read the reviews on Mill House and was surprised to see the most recent reviews of Mill House, but the previous ones are all fantastic. Their press is fantastic too.

I had read an earlier post you wrote re the other fork and a wonderful place in Jamestown. If we stay at Baker house we can only get the last 2 nights there. I'm thinking, since Jamestown will sort of be on the way for our trip to the Hamptons (coming from CT), that we go there for a night first and then head over to the hamptons for a few nights, rather than stay at 2 hotels in EH. Does that sound like a good plan?

Your posts are always so helpful--Thank you!

If you can tell me which rooms you're considering at both (names or numbers), I can have a look in the next few days assuming they'll let me in . I don't mind and am curious to see them myself. I'm actually having lunch at East Hampton Point so could also check that out if you're interested.

If by the smallest at Baker House, you're talking about the Fithian, I don't think I could stay there, esp. for over $600/night. The room seems claustrophic and the bed is actually 2 single beds pushed together-not always comfortable.

Unless prices are outdated on the website or it's already booked, it looks like you could have a cottage at the Maidstone Arms for the same price as a room at either of the others. http://www.maidstonearms.com/accomodations.html Have you considered that? It's right near both Baker House & 1770.

Jedediah Hawkins in Jamesport is absolutely lovely and I have seen the rooms there several times. They're not large but nicely done. If you're into food and wine, I think it's a very nice idea. Their restaurant is terrific and there's also another restaurant that's recently opened (haven't tried it yet) called the Jamesport Manor Inn that's supposed to have very good food. Several of the vineyards are pretty close; Paumanok is particularly is good. You're not far from the Tanger Outlet Mall from there if that holds any interest.

PS when I said the outside of 1770 is not very impressive, I meant just that. It doesn't look anywhere near as grand from the street but their garden could be quite nice. I haven't seen it. It doesn't have a pool though.

At Baker, we were looking at the Fithian (hoping to spend under 700 rather than over 800 which is what their larger king rooms go for. They have a new room called the Tyler that is available for the higher price

At the Mill House we were looking at the Hamptons classic room- some other rooms look better, but aren't available.

At the 1770,Room 3 is the one we're interested in.

Thanks for your advice. If you do happen to see any of these, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
P.S-we prob won't stay at EHPI bc of the location. Thanks!

Sorry, but $600 per night for these rooms? I am familiar with these establishments and all I can say is (and how do I say this delicately?)... complete rip-off. I would spend my money elsewhere.

mcLaurie- if we were traveling with our child, i'd consider maidstone, but we want something with more of a luxurious feel.

and to michelle, yes it is a ton of money, but even the moderate places charge alot of money relative to what you get.

I just don't think this is worth that kind of money. I take it you're somewhere in the NYC/metro area and don't want to go too far? If you're flexible, I would look into other options.

I think the Maidstone feels very nice although I haven't seen the rooms. If you can in fact get an entire cottage (they have 3) there for the same price as that small room at the Baker House, I certainly would. The location is the same, the restaurant is very nice, they have a nice enclosed porch area for drinks and a pretty backyard. I've been there for lunch, dinner and drinks many times and have never seen any kids there. I think the decor in the public areas is very nice.

Re- the money/value. From my experience, the higher end hotels/resorts/inns have really increased their prices in the higher end resort towns. Nantucket, Chatham, Newport--all the top places are charging over 500 and well, well above for a nice room. Are they overpriced? IMO, yes, but that is what you have to pay in season if you want to stay in that level of a place. I'm not surprised that EH is at that level too. I'm not saying i like it, but it seems like those are the ranges that we're faced with at the better places.

McLaurie- is the Maidstone the one that has or used to have the Palm right on Main Street? I have stayed there if that's the place. My DH would like something a little sleeker-- he loves the grounds of Baker, at least from the website photos. If you get over there and they let you look at a room, could you check out the Tyler room? Thanks so much!

No Maidstone is NOT where the Palm is. That's the Huntting Inn. Maidstone is on the other side of Main St. much closer to the pond. As you turn onto Main St. at the pond, first you come to Baker House (I think) on the left, then Maidstone then 1770 House. I plan on checking these out today or tomorrow. Is the Tyler room at Maidstone? I don't see it listed at Baker House (assuming you're still thinking about the Fithian there).

Tyler is at Baker-- it's not on their website yet- it's a newer room. More expensive than the Fithian, but bigger and better according to the people there. Thanks mcLaurie- I look forward to reading your reviews!

Report part I.
Phoned Baker House this morning to make sure I could see the rooms you're interested in. They are completely filled and said no, rooms are occupied. I asked about changeover day and they said tomorrow both rooms will change guests. So I'm scheduled to go there tomorrow.

Meanwhile I was going to East Hampton Point for lunch (lovely spot but very disappointing lobster roll) so I stopped unannounced at 1770 House. Unfortunately #3 was occupied, but the lovely Natalie showed me #4 & 5. All I can say is the rooms are exactly as pictured on the website--immaculate and newly decorated with not a spot anywhere.

We walked in the garden where they are now serving dinner when weather permits. It's very pretty. Breakfast (freshly cooked) is included in the price of the room. I asked about a pool and she said guests are free to use the pool at their sister property East Hampton Point (I had forgotten they're now owned by the same people). She also mentioned they give out parking passes for the nearby beach.

Will let you know about Baker House tomorrow.

McLaurie- you are the best! I love the pics from EHPI website and the rooms looks gorgeous-- glad they live up! My only hesitation for tha property is the location-- we like to go out to dinner and that 3 mile rd is long at the end of the night. Looking forward to tomorrow's report! Thank you!

I think you misunderstood me. I did NOT look at the rooms at East Hampton Point (merely ate there). I DID look at 2 rooms at the 1770 House. That's what I was reporting on and saying they're exactly as the website. I had forgotten they're owned by the same people now.
