Haleakala on Horseback?

Well, DH wasn't as successful as he'd like about reducing his weight so that he would meet the requirement of Pony Express (235#),who we wanted to use to tour Haleakala.

I noticed on www.hawaiiactitivies.com that the weight restriction is much more generous : 260#!

Is this a reputable company? It doesn't list the name, just the meeting place as 'Sun Visitors Center'. The info sounds the same as the Pony Express description. Is it as good?? Thanks!

Sorry about the double posting, was sure I had the HI forum, yet it didn't post there. Belle.

Doesn't anyone have an experience with these folks? They say their name is Haleakala on Horseback. Belle.

i'll top this one for you Belle. but i don't remember seeing tourists on horseback up at Haleakala...

i saw your jam packed itinerary on another thread, don't you think you already have enough activities planned even if you don't get to do this one?

kindly,

Of course, you're right! I am being piggish...just know I'd be able to see more by horseback.

Since I look at this as a one time shot, I would like to live it to the Max! Belle.

suze - I've been on horseback down into the crater, so I know they do it. They usually start around 9am, so most people who go up for sunrise wouldn't see them, perhaps that's why you didn't see them?
This is another one I found on line:

My family and I are signed up for this through pony express tours, it leaves at 9AM. In my case, I was successfull at dropping enough weight to meet their requirement. The horseback riding wasn't the only reason I made that effort.

The website is www.ponyexpresstours.com

They also do online reservations, you can use that site to check whether theres any availability for the date you want.

Several years ago my husband and I took the Pony Express tour. It was fabulous. I don't remember seeing any other outfit there at the same time, but I think I remember our guide stating that another company did have tours as well. It was an all day adventure, so if you are able to schedule, be prepared for a day that begins at around 9:00 a.m. and ends at around 3:30 p.m. Remember to dress in layers also. It's cold at the top and gets progressively warmer as you go down. Then you return to the top of the crater at the end of the ride.

Two companies currently do tours, Pony Express and Haleakala on Horseback.

This story regarding this activity ran in a recent issue of the Maui News:

Belle,

Nothing to add really but I've been watching this post because I suspect that my DH is hovering dangerously close to the 235# mark also. We are booked to do the horseback ride later this month and he assures me that this won't be a problem! (Poor horses...)

Hope you have a great trip!

Well, I wish him success! My DH said that 6 mo. ago, then again 3 mo. ago...you get my drift...but we'll have a good time regardless! To be honest, I've about talked myself out of being interested in it! But if you've not made the reservations yet, the HOH Co. has a higher restriction (260#).

kama: That's how you reach the Haleakala on Horseback company.

JohnW and Sherrie: I knew about the Pony Express (they have the reputation but a tighter weight restriction), was just alittle concerned that I couldn't find out any info (experience) with HOH.

Thanks to all and esp. to Here for clearing it up...it's a newer company...still reputable.
Belle

sorry, just because i didn't see it, i certainly did not mean to imply that the horseback ride tour didn't exist! only that it was not so obviously visible, like the loads of bike riders coming down.

and no, i didn't go for sunrise. thankfully my entire family agreeded we were happy to go mid-day.
