Greektown Michigan??

What's it like? Is it worth a mini weekend trip from Cleveland? Nice hotels nearby?

Any info would be great...last minute idea for this weekend.

Thanks!

With the advent of casino gaming in Detroit, if you're really into gambling, perhaps it would be worth a drive from Cleveland.

Or perhaps if you really, really love Greek food, there are six or ten fine greek restaurants in the couple of blocks that comprise Detroit's Greektown.

Otherwise, I personally would say save your gas for a destination with a little more depth...

The Atheneum Hotel is a nice, all-suites hotel right in Greektown that's half a block from the Greektown Casino and right next to all kinds of restaurants including Fishbone's (creole), Pizza Papalis (deep dish pizza), Pegasus (Greek), Monroe Street Bar & Grill, Blue Nile (Ehtiopian) and so on. Plus, it's a short walk to Ford Field and Comerica Park if your plans include a football or baseball game.

Greektown makes a nice addition to visiting the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village. They rival the Smithstonian.

Or a nice addition to a visit to Windsor Ontario, or a sporting event.

But unless I was in the area, I wouldn't make a trip just to go to Greektown.

Boy, do I agree with Keith! I lived in the area a number of years ago, and while I did enjoy greektown on occasion, I would never look at it as a destination!

OK, no, Greektown itself is not a destination. However, it would be a great addition to visiting Detroit!!I know that the TIgers are HORRIBLE, but Comerica Park is actually a nice stadium, not to mention that there are beginning to be nice bars, etc in that area. And they're almost paying people to go, great deals! I was just recently at Henry Ford Musuem and was amazed at how wonderful it is! I've lived in the metro-Detroit area all my life and never knew how great it is. Keep in mind, it would take one day to do the museum and another to do Greenfield Village, so keep that in mind! Greektown, getting to the original post, is a great place to spend the day/evening the streets are neat to wander, lots of great greek (obviously) restaurants as well as the aforementioned Pizza Papalis (really busy on weekend). If you're into Jazz/Blues the Music Menu Cafe has great musicians (Thornetta Davis, etc) and a greeat beer selection for a fun nightcap! If you need any other advice on the Detroit area let me know and I'd love to help!

Upon re-reading, it appears the original poster is under the impression that Greektown is a city in Michigan, not the little strip of restaurants in downtown Detroit that it is.

If you're visiting Detroit, certainly Greektown should be in your plans because it is only one of a few spots worth visiting in the city proper, unfortunately.

See other posts on what to do in Detroit, also Windsor, Ontario, and the Detroit Metro area, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, etc....

Don't forget all of the work it takes your waiter to present the perfect "Opahhhh." Overtipping is customary after enjoying your flaming greek goat cheese.

I take exception to the post asserting there's little to do in the city of Detroit - there's a great science center, a worldclass art museum, a fantastic park in the river, a great historical museum and so on. That sounded like paranoid suburbanitespeak.

The Detroit Institute of Arts is very nice too. And today's Free Press has an article in it about a Greektown bar (Athens Lounge) that really kicks out awesome Karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights. I know I want to go there!

The article is at:

martytravels: I could not agree with you more!!! I will epound on the great aspects of my hometown until the cows come home!! I'm beginning to really enjoy the COPA/Fox Theater district. Hockeytown CAfe, The Elwood B & G, The Town Pump, Second City.....One could really have a lovely weekend in Detroit, if they'd open their minds and give it a chance!
I guess they'll have to if they want to come to the Superbowl in 2006 or the Baseball All Star Game in 2005!!!

To respond to some comments...

I do realize Greektown is in Detroit..

Greektown is the destination rather than Detroit because my Dad wants to spend most of his time in the casino. It would be my Mom and I wondering around the streets, shopping. Would this be safe for the two of us to do in the daytime? My Mom's friend told her today that it is not safe and we should not go there by any means (she grew up in a rough part of Cleveland too)...so now my Mom doesn't want to go but my Dad really does.

What sort of shopping is there, and where should we eat dinner (if we do go, which I think we will)? We are going for one day/ one night.

Thanks

crazieladybug, Greektown and downtown Detroit in general are QUITE safe. It's a busy area day and night, lined with nightspots and restaurants. The casino is busy 24/7.

This is paranoid suburbanite here. The posts saying that there is a lot to do in Detroit sounds like unbridled boosterism to me. I was just in downtown Detroit today, near the Science Center, and was overwhelmed by what a desolate and univiting town Detroit is.

Yes, there is a nice art museum, some nice bars and restaurants in Greektown and on Jefferson and near the Fox, but I can't imagine why anyone but a local or a paranoid suburbanite in close proximity would want to visit Detroit.

Karaoke? Don't they have that in Cleveland too? Or perhaps you could find a good spot in Toledo.

Random acts of violence in Greektown have been well reported in the local papers and shopping? There is virtually no shopping anywhere in the entire city of Detroit. You have to go to the suburbs to find decent shopping areas.

The bars and stuff mentioned here are nice, but again, why would anyone but a local care? I would love for Detroit to be an exciting well-rounded city and tourist destination like Chicago, but it just isn't.

How could there be no shopping in all of downtown Detroit?

Crazieladybug, I wouldn't let the negative poster deter your plans. Come and enjoy Detroit, Greektown and the casino. Clearly that poster doesn't spend much time in the city. I don't think a schlep down to the science center qualifies you as a Zagat guide.

And random acts of violence? I watch the same TV stations and read the same newspapers, and I'm missing whatever he (or she) is talking about.

Don't forget that there are random acts of kindness being committed every day in Detroit, too. Everyone knows the media latches onto negatives because they believe people want to hear that.

I wouldn't condemn an entire city and ignore its strong points because of a few negatives. And I'm not quite sure what "only a local would care" means, regarding the nice bars and attractions. That's what tourism is, people traveling to get a taste of what different places have to offer. This is a travel board, after all.

"Clearly that poster doesn't spend much time in the city. I don't think a schlep down to the science center qualifies you as a Zagat guide."

I've spent a fair amount of time in downtown Detroit over the past 40 years or so and I've spent much much Much less time in cities like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, or even Las Vegas, and there is no denying that Detroit cannot hold a candle to them in any category: shopping, restaurants, entertainment, casinos, or you name it -- with the possible exception of the sports stadiums which are new and beautiful.

For a big city, Detroit is remarkable for the lack of pedestrians milling about the town, strolling the avenues, etc. except for perhaps weekday lunch hours around the office buildings and during events like the excellent Jazz festival at Hart Plaza. Part of this is again due to the fact that there is virtually (I said virtually) no decent shopping areas anywhere in downtown Detroit. Yes, there are some nice stores inside the Renaissance Center and perhaps someone might cite Eastern Market, but the lack of any shopping district in Detriot is both a sympton and a cause of Detroit's haplessness.

Yes, Detroit has some great spots (like the art and science museum, nice casinos, a lovely riverfront, some good bars and restaurants), but Detroit is not a great city like those I mentioned above - there can be no argument here. The sooner the boosters admit this to themselves and perhaps put pressure on the politicians that have had a hand in ruining this beautiful town on the river, the sooner Detroit will be a favored destination (not a scattered collection of nice spots)even for jaded suburbanites like myself.

gbhost, allow me to retort. I don't believe that any of the "boosters", as you labeled myself and others, ever claimed that Detroit holds a candle to the oh-so-wonderful-why-would-anyone-ever-go-anywhere-else-other-than NY, Chicago, or Las Vegas. I know that Detroit is not there yet. However, for someone that is looking for a quick weekend destination (especially from Cleveland which is a mere 3-3.5 hours away) I think it could fit the bill. If people like yourself don't stop bashing Detroit to others inquiring about visiting we will make no progress. And yes, the politicians need to be made to do more. I personally think that some strides to promote tourism, and improve the city, are taking place. The new hotel deals w/ the Book Cadillac, etc. The area around the stadiums. Cripes, even Dearborn is cracking down on seedy hotels, it was in the Detroit News yesterday!! So please, stop bashing. I normally try to let negative posts roll off of my back, but I can't be quiet about my home town.

Now, crazieladybug, as far as safety during the day in Greektown, absolutely! I used to go there every Sunday night to hear a friend's band play and never felt unsafe even at 2 AM. There really isn't much shopping. Trappers Alley, which was a little shopping area, closed when the darn casinos came in. So, that's a bummer. If you really want to shop, head to Birmingham. About 30 minutes north, has a lot of cute boutiquey stores along w/ some chains. Like I said before, if you have any other questions, let me know!
