Grand Canyon -- Sedona questions

Hi -- We are leaving next week and are trying to decide how to divide the very few days we have for our trip to Las Vegas - Grand Canyon - Sedona. We plan on one night in Las Vegas, drive to Grand Canyon via the Hoover Dam the next morning arriving late afternoon. We will stay over that night in the El Tovar and have the next day to explore. Is it worth it to stay a second night in the Grand Canyon? We are travelling with two seniors and an infant so we will not be hiking/muling. We had thought the best plan might be to head out midafternoon that day to Sedona and spend two nights there and explore around that area. One last question: we are debating between the Comfort Inn in Sedona and the Best Western Arroyo Roble. Anyone have an opinion on which would be better? Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

With seniors and a baby and no plans for going below the rim, one day will be enough to see so much beauty. If you have not been there yet, just wait till you catch your first glimpse!

Sedona is a magical place. Two days there will be nice as there is more to do then just looking at stunning rock formations. You can take a Jeep ride into the canyon. If you have time or the inclination you can travel south (about an hour?), to a small artists colony(Jerome?). I didn't do this but heard it is worth it. Meteor crater is about an hour? east.

Hi

I would highly recommend the Southwest Inn at Sedonna!

We stayed there a year ago and it was wonderful. I would describe it as a glorified motel, the rooms are very pleasant and some have jacuzzi! We had our then, 12 year old with us, so had the King Suite which was superb. There is a small pool and hot tub outside. Breakfast is very good.

We also stayed at El Tovar, be warned, in our opinion, the hotel wasn't all it was made out be. We felt is was resting on its laurels!!! The service was terrible, which surprised us as during our visits to the USA the service is beyond anything you would get in our native UK! However, the location of El Tovar cannot be beaten! It is absolutely astounding. Email me is you want more info on GC and Sedona.

I agree, 1 night at the Canyon will be plenty if you aren't hiking. But I would suggest you take a guided tour - it is the only way to go! They know all the good spots & can give you history, folk lore, sight animals, etc. Ours had a spotting scope also. About $65 per person.

There is more to do in Sedona than the Canyon. I live in Phoenix so don't know about those hotels in particular - I've always stayed in small lodging (as the writer above). They are along Oak Creek Canyon & have great views! Don't miss Tlaquepaque - a replica of an old Mexican village that has fab arty shops - you will surely find a wonderful unique souvenir. They have Pink Jeep tours & definitely drive up the mountain to the ghost town Jerome - it is sliding down the mountain a few inches a year!

Driving from the Grand Canyon, be sure to take the back way from Flagstaff down the mountain switchbacks. Its an incredibly beautiful drive - just ask directions - everyone knows the way!

Have a great time!

The amount of time you have set aside in each place is appropriate. And I do recommend the drive from Sedona to Jerome if for nothing but the view coming and going. There is a neat little museum in Jerome with a film that tells the history of the area. Well worth it if you have already driven that far.

If you can afford to pay extra, would recommend two resorts in Sedona - L'Auberge de Sedona, located in town alongside Oak Creek - wonderful, peaceful place. Other choice, our favorite place to stay in Sedona, is Enchantment Resort, located in Boynton Canyon. It's red rock views are incredible. Also a very peaceful place, tucked away from town.

I stayed at the Comfort Inn in Sedona and really liked it and thought it was good value for the money. Well-located, comfortable rooms, and a decent continental breakfast included in the price.

However, I have to say that I liked Grand Canyon MUCH more than Sedona, and I would definitely recommend at least two nights at the Grand Canyon even if you're not hiking/muling -- there are nice drives and walks along the south rim you can take, and ranger talks, and all kinds of interesting things.

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks for all your input.

We loved our trip!! We spent the night in El Tovar, which was just fabulous. The restaurant there, however, was not very good. We were so glad we only had breakfast there and didn't splurge for dinner.

In Sedona, we stayed in the Best Western, Arroyo Roble, and absolutely loved it. Excellent location within walking distance of all shops and restaurants and with private patios overlooking the red rocks (ask for a room with a view.) Would highly recommend.

Thanks again, everyone!
