First let's start with the correct spelling-it's GrameRcy. The hotel sits on the only private park in NYC. People who live on Gramercy Park are entitled to a key to get in. The hotel is old & some of the rooms are a bit faded but I think the public spaces have been recently renovated. The area is very pretty (and historic).
There are many restaurants right near by incuding Gramercy Tavern, considered by many to be the best rest. in NYC. Verbena is another excellent rest. Pete's Tavern on 18th st is a famous saloon (casual, moderate priced food)said to be where O Henry wrote the story "The Gift of the Magi."

Gramercy Tavern is one of the best in NYC as the others have said. If you don't (or can't) get reservations, you can go and sit in the front part of the restaurant--a bit more casual but the same great food. Pete's is also a good choice for a casual bite to eat--mostly an Italian menu, great bar area.

Probably too late but:
inexpensive, filling, fun: Duke's, 19th Street between Irving Place & Park Avenue - Southern food, margaritas -- head for the dining room in the back
cheap adequate fast Chinese: Cottage - 16th St & Irving Place
ditto, slightly better food - Tang, 20th St/3rd Ave (great lunch special, $5)
Authentic South Indian: Curry Leaf - Lexington Ave & about 27th Street. Has a bar (many Indian places don't)
Well-priced Japanese - Choshi - 19th st & Irving Place
Famous stand-in-line Japanese, in Washington Irving's House - Yama - 18th btw Irving/Park
Continental breakfast, superb coffee & bked goods, also light lunches - Cafe 72, 72 Irving Place
Forgettable food, great atmosphere & history - O. Henry's Irving Place/18th St
basic reliable cheap all-night diner - Third Avenue about 16th or 17th St, west side of avenue.
Avoid: L'Express, service is lousy
other people like this, I don't - Friend of a Farmer, Irving Place btw 18-19th Streets
Verbena seems to have disappeared

Rooms can be iffy. When you check in, politely inform the desk clerk that you will be checking out your room before you accept the accommodation.
Great location. Walk down 10 blocks or so and eat at Second Avenue Deli. Gramercy Tavern is fantastic but $$$$.
