Going to Graceland.....

Hi everyone! My husband and I are both huge Elvis fans and will be going to Memphis September 9-14! We will stay at Heartbreak Hotel the 9-12 and Peabody the 12-14! We plan on going to Graceland and the zoo anyone have any opinions on these? So I was wondering what other things there were to do?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Where to eat, what to see, maybe something that's off the beaten path that a tourist wouldn't know about??? Thanks so much!! Lori

We loved Memphis and are also great Elvis fans. The Graceland shops are very touristy, but, so what! It,s a great feeling just to be there and to visit the Memorial Garden which is very moving.
Don,t forget Sun studios (ask directions)and get a picture holding the microphone with which Elvis recorded his first record. In Beale Street there is a restaurant called Elvis' Memphis, it is on the corner, they have good food and usually a 50's rock n' roll band which are really good. It,s a lively night.
Go see the Memphis Belle and if you are lucky there will be a massive barbeque by the riverside, I believe they have them several times a year. All this should take care of your five days.Have fun.

The Memphis Belle is no longer in Memphis.
I've heard bad reviews of the Heartbreak Hotel.
Graceland is a must for any Elvis fan, as is Sun Studios and Lanksy's shop at the Peabody Hotel. You may just be waited on by Mr. Lansky himself, he actually knew Elvis and helped dress him in his very early years.
Rendezvous for BBQ and Gus's Fried Chicken..YUM!
Sun Studios...2nd best thing tour after Graceland.
Have Fun!

I just posted a long reply to your post and it promptly got eaten up by the internet gremlins, so I'll make this short and sweet.

The only thing to see while staying at Heartbreak Hotel is Graceland, and even for huge Elvis fans, 3 days might be a bit much for someplace you could probably tour in a day. I might add that though Graceland and Heartbreak Hotel are safe, the area surrounding them is NOT - so don't walk around.

The Peabody is a Memphis institution and the center of downtown activity. It's near lots of tourist attractions and restaurants.

The zoo is great!

Do not leave Memphis without seeing the National Civil Rights Museum!

Now hopefully, this will post. Have a wonderful time in Memphis - we love it!

I live in Memphis. Definitely hit Rendevous for Ribs and Chicken BBQ Nachos. The best!
Also Beale Street is just about 2 blocks from the Peabody for some blues music.
Take the trolley car tour down main street and the riverfront. It is about 25 or 50 cents during the week.
Gibson's Guitar Factory is also close to get a tour. This is supposed to be interesting.
Go to a Redbirds game if they are in town. It is right in the area or check out the Fed Ex Forum also downtown for any Grizzlies games.
Rachel Ray did $40 a day in Memphis. Check out the FoodNetwork site for the restaurants she went to.
The zoo is supposed to be nice. There is the Dixon Gardens. There are also alot of museums in downtown Memphis to see also.

Okay now I have another question! I have been reading alot of different reviews on Memphis and the hotels I have mentioned and found that there seems to be an issue on where you can park and what it cost? Anyone know anything about this? Does Graceland and the Peabody not have free guest parking if you are staying there?
