If you are going to be in Nashville, don't miss see the Opryland Hotel. It is about 7 miles from the Airport. They have shuttle service available. Over 2,000 rooms surround magnificent indoor gardens with waterfalls and tropical plants. In November it will be decorated for Christmas which I think, is the most breathtaking time to see it.
You can easily spend 1 full day there. Also be sure to take a crusie on the General Jackson Showboat. We especially enjoy the brunch cruise and the Shotgun Red Show, however the evening dinner cruise with the broadway style show was great also. The river taxis can take you down town to see the Ryman Auditorium and the Wildhourse Saloon for a self guided tour. I can say Nashville is my favorite town. We live about 250 miles from there but usually go a least once or twice a year. November happens to be MY favorite time to go. Hope you like it as much as we do.

JP is obviosly in the pay of opryland. As a lifelong resident of Nashville, I can assure anyone reading this that The hotel is not worth losing half a day of a short vacation in seeing. There is a really pretty bar there with tropical gardens if you want to drive half an hour from the center of the town and PAY to park to have a drink. If you have never been out of a small town in the midwest, the hotel is neat to see, if you have ever trav eled at all there are much more interesting ,local and real places that are lovely and educational as well and even have bars..

Look to our local alternative newspaper, The Scene for all the music listings(there are hundreds) and avoid anything related toor located near Opryland like the plague unless as I said you want the pure rube tourist experience.

JP, excuse the repetion of my first note...new to this stuff. I came on this site because I saw a Fodor's Nashville guide and was shocked at what it listed as things to do, see or shop. Nashville is full of music and most of what you will want to see is within a mile and a half radius. The opryland stuff is pretty much for the bluehairs and the rubes. Try to stay somewhere either downtown or in the Vandy area (better...lots to walk to food and stuff) . All the good clubs are south of town within a very narrow range. A car can be rented off airport from tennessee car and van rental. they have a location near the airport and will possibly come to you there. There is also Atlas car rental who will pick you up (or used to) both rent small cars for about $20 a day. much cheaper than taxis. There are many local clubs that are must visits but I am not about to put them on the net..
You can find them when you are in town.

good luck
