First Time Oregon Visit Questions - Coast
Hi fellow Fodorites!
I'm thinking of taking a week + vacation to the Oregon coast this summer, probably in June. If I do it, it will be a home exchange vacation so I need to look for a good base where I can do and see things by day trips. I'll be driving from UT.
I plan on relaxing, but also enjoy hiking & biking, whale & bird watching, wine tasting, photography.
Is June an OK month, or is Oregon like southern CA and foggy and overcast in June?
Any recommendations for the smaller coastal towns that would make a good base? So far I'm thinking Yachtas (SP?), Waldford, Gold Beach, Cannon Beach?

There's still a pretty good chance of rain in June. Best time for the visit you describe would be mid-July through mid-September.
Because of the variety of sights and activities in the area, I think Yachats would be a great spot. Cannon Beach would be nice too, especially for the "relaxing" part.
You'd probably think Gold Beach a little too isolated, but the coastline in that area is jaw-dropping beautiful. Never been there when the wind hasn't been blowing though.
I assume you mean Waldport? It's in a good location, but not usually thought of as a destination. More commercial than tourist driven, I think. Of those you listed, it would probably be at the bottom of my list.

As long as you don't expect warm weather in June, you'll be fine. Prepare for some rain and possibly fog and wind, then when you get some sun you'll be pleased. With that expectation, the Oregon Coast is stunning in many kinds of weather. It's just not a place where (except on a few extremely hot August days) one sunbathes on the beach. Hiking opportunities abound, though.
Weather all times of the year are really not that predictable. On a visit to the southern Oregon Coast last year mid-September, I got two days of pure fog. You could get beautiful weather in June.

Thanks beachbum, I was throwing out a couple names I remembered from the home exchange site and the map! Hate strong wind, so may nix Gold Beach.
Placename, I didn't mention swimming as one of my activities as I know well how cold the Pacific is. Born and raised in southern CA and it's too cold to swim there too.
Any other suggestions?

Manzanita, Oceanside, Pacific City, Neskowin.... Gearhart in a pinch. Any home exchanges in Cascade Head Ranch? How about Arch Cape?
Regardless of where you choose, don't expect to see whales; and except for in a wine shop, you won't find a good tasting experience inside of a 1.5 hour drive.

Thanks again beachbum. I'll check out those exact names. Many times home exchangers don't name the exact, small towns since they don't mean much to non-locals.
Whales, I've seen before. Was wondering if a 1 - 2 night stop (on the way or back) to wine country would be doable?

Post back if you have questions about locations then, Dayle.
I expect your route from Utah will take you through Portland(?) The heart of wine country is about 25 miles SW of the city, along hwy 99W, which is one of the main routes to the central coast. So yes, you should be able to fit in some tasting. Tasting room hours are generally between 11:00am and 5:00pm. Once you've settled on a home exchange location, we can help with some winery recommendations that would make sense.

Arch Cape is great and only 10miles south on 101 from Cannon Beach.
We stayed at the Inn at Arch Cape and felt like we were in another world.. those deep dark forests on one side of the road and the ocean on the other..
Funny about the freezing water comment.. there is a poster on another board who always talks about surfing in those waters... brrrr... my feet turn blue just walking on the wet sand in Cannon Beach!
All of the things that you say you plan to do are perfect for that part of the Oregon coast..
