Family Vacation to DC/ kids are 20 &24

I just recently finished my final round of chemotherapy. As a celebration my husband and I are planning a trip 3 1/2 day trip to D.C. starting Aug. 7. My girls are 20 and 24. We want to stay downtown where we can go back to the hotel if I poop out! I don't need luxury, I'd like economic, clean, and safe! I've even looked at some B&B's. What areas are safe for us to stay in?
SInce my girls have never been they are picking a few places that they would like to see. We are doing some of the monuments and Smithsonian. Are there any shows/plays going on that would be worth seeing?
If you had to pick your top 3 restaurants, (1 being pizza, 1 being steak, the other your choice) what would they be?!!

Any place that is "downtown" and has hotels will be perfectly safe. The only areas I would not call safe are when people try to find a real cheap motel out on the edges of the city, say on NY ave towards the east or something like that, or some motel up north on Georgia Ave. Hotel rates are cheaper in August, I believe, they usually are in the summer outside business periods, so you shouldn't have a problem finding something reasonable. Some place around Verizon Center, the downtown Marriott or Dupont Circle would be fine and very convenient (or even Franklin Square).

pam(?),

Some hotels that have what you want:

http://www.tabardinn.com/

http://www.redroof.com/reservations/...l.aspx?pid=254

Pizza: http://seventhhill.com/
Not only the best pizza in town (IMHO), but in a nice convenient neighborhood close to the Capitol, one block to Eastern Market metro station.

Steak: a little tougher, There are MANY excellent steakhouses, but they are none are cheap.
http://www.thecapitalgrille.com/ is my vote for best steak. However, if you want a place you can wear tourists clothes (i.e. - no ties), then consider http://www.chophouse.com/LocationHom...cationID=10092

My Choice: http://www.jaleo.com/ (7th & E sT. NW)
Not too expensive, jeans/shorts welcome. EXCELLENT food and not likely to find a place back home (even if you and your family are coming from SF or NYC).

All the places above are in areas inside the tourist zone - none are in far flung residential areas.

Here's a link to the Washington Post's Theatre Guide. You can find out which shows will be going on while you are here, read a description of the shows and maybe even read a review of the show. http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/dc-theater.html
One thing that your family might enjoy doing is a Segway tour of D.C. We did this with our grown children a couple years ago and we all had a blast! There's no real skill involved in riding a Segway, but you do need to be able to stand for the duration of the tour (2 hours). We are locals who were doing a "Vacation Day in D.C." and found the Segway guide to be very knowledgeable about the city. If you do this tour, I would recommend that you do it on one of your first days here because you'll be able to get your bearings and also find out about some neat things to see and do from your guide. Also, due to the heat we've been having this summer, I'd recommend doing one of the evening tours--it's cooler and there are fewer pedestrians, making it easier to get around on the Segway.

When you head to the Smithsonian museums or the monuments, use the circulator bus--just goes round and round the DC Mall--fare is $1.00 I believe. Has saved us some long walks. Best wishes with your recovery, BTW.

Great info from everyone. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I have asked my husband about the Segway...just because I thought it would be fun. Where would we inquire about them?
