Fairbanks Hotel
We will be arriving in Fairbanks on Aug 10 for a land tour beginning on Aug 11. Any suggestions for a hotel for the night of Aug 10 and also suggestions for what we might want to do in Fairbanks on Aug 11. Thanks for your help. David

We visited Fairbanks last summer and stayed at the Alpine Lodge. It is a newer motel near the airport. It is not fancy but was very nice and clean and the people were great. There are many things to do in Fairbanks but our favorite is the Museum of the North at the University.

There is plenty to do in Fairbanks, the above just doesn't know about it. Request their visitor guide www.fairbanks.com
Are you on a formal "land tour" or are you independent?? A car is necessary in Fairbanks, in my opinion.

Thanks for the info. We are on a "cruisetour" - 4 nights on land and a 7 day cruise. First night is Aug 11 in Fairbanks, second and third nights in Denali and fourth night in Anchorage. We then go to Seward to board our cruise ship. We are flying in a day early so need the room for the night of Aug 10 and then want to take advantage of having all day to visit some things. Our tour includes a cruise on the Riverboat Discovery Sternwheeler and a visit to an Athabascan village. Thanks for any suggestions you can give. David

As only a suggestion, I advise you to ditch the cruisetour transportation to Seward and haul yourself out early and get the Alaska RR leaving at 6:45am. This is far superior to the bus and most important- gets you into Seward in time to do something. It's a gem of a city with plenty of touring highlights- many do not miss. My top recommendation is a Kenai fjords boat tour, close up glacier viewing and varied wildlife, superior to anything from your cruiseship.
The ship transportation, leaves too early from Anchorage to do anything and arrives too late in Seward for much of anything either. You have the opportunity- consider taking advantage of it.

Thanks Budget Queen. We appreciate the recommendation. We are actually taking the train from Anchorage to Seward as a part of our tour - it is a special viewing train. Would that change your recommendation any? Thanks for the website on Fairbanks - any particular hotel you like in Fairbanks? Thanks for your help. David

Sorry, your "special viewing" cruisetour train is a poor option. And you have the exact same viewing as the regular run of the Alaska RR, same tracks.
The big problem with this cruisetour option- you leave Anchorage too early for any activities, and arrive Seward too late for anything there either. I strongly suggest you bail out of this poor choice, get a refund and get yourself up early and take the regular run of the RR and get into Seward in time to enjoy it. You are missing out on some SIGNIFICANT touring opportunities. Take a hard look and determine if you have come all the way to Alaska to do so??
