Expate Returns To Germany
First and foremost a BIG thank you to all the Fodorites who helped with their suggestions for my one month trip to the US.
Priceline was the best for making addional flight plans tho' I had to use the same carrier R. T. to get the lowesr fares.
Kansas City MO was a pleasant surprise especially the Plaza area. Plaza III rest. served the best cooked steak I've eaten in a long time but I think the prices are a little to high I purchased a low end French wine (cote d'rhone)$29. to have with my meal and it was bottled with a twist off cap, which is unhead of in France. Drank it anyway but felt a bit riped off.
Ponak's Mexican Rest. the BEST and they serve the most fantastic Margarits I've ever tasted. If you drink two or more then don't even think of driving.
My first trip to Boston...FANTASTIC, cannot wait to go back. Got to a Red Sox game but had to take out a second mortg. to buy the tics.
Lastly, I got caught in the new security measures whiched caused much needless delays and being a smoker and not being able to go back outside security, due to the long, slow lines added a little more stress to my trip. I think it's time to give m' up.

Glad you had fun. "The City of Fountains" KC is indeed very nice to visit. Did you see a KC Royals game there? Might not have cost a second mortgage to see them play.
The twist off wine is getting more prevalent. Servers at my regular restaurant in Indiana hate them. They feel stupid twisting off the cap as they present the wine.

Indy..yes you are correct about the "City Of Fountains" and by the way the airport MCI, is very user friendly.

Regarding "twist-off" - the guy at our local wine store (the place we go for free wine tastings and special occasion bottles) said that within 5-10 years everything will have twist-off, even expensive wines. That will be an adjustment, but will solve problem we always have of forgetting corkscrew when we travel.

Glad you had a good time, Bill. Regarding the wine, bottom line, how did it taste to you? Was it just the twist off cap that made you feel ripped off?

Good point Maggi.The wine suited my taste and my daughter and husband enjoyed it as well, this is why I didn't make a big deal about it at the restaurant. As for feeling "ripped off" I suppose I was being a "bit uppity" due to the fact that I reside in a wine region....confession is good for the soul. Thanks

I presume you are well aware that cork nowadays is only being used on wine bottles for image reasons.
Quality-wise there is no way cork would be superior to any screwcap - or to those waxen corks being used quite a bit, too. In fact, with cork you always run the risk of the cork turning bad and thus ruining the wine, which is definitely not going to happen with a screwcap.
Cork is also quite expensive - and consequently this will be reflected in the price of the wine. In order to be able to offer quality wines at still reasonable prices, winemakers tend to turn to those more modern sealing methods. Nothing wrong with that in my book - and some of the better winemakers in Germany have taken that approach, too. Look at the Schloss Vollrads Rieslings for example.
I agree, that twisting a cork from a bottleneck does - as sort of a relict of past times - have its charms, though.

Lucky you! We have our roots and lots of family in Germany (many in Willsbach, near Heilbronn) and have spent lots of time exploring the wine regions. Especially loved the little towns along the Mosel. A good German Gewurtztraminer is one of our favorite wines. Auf Wiedersehen!

A wonderful region for sure Maggi and when I move back to the U S, I will miss it's people, charm, natural beauty and their many festivals. Nothing like a good wander thru' the Wald and stopping along the way for a cold Riesling Schorle. Tho' I'm a great German beer lover I must admit there is more to Deutschland then Bavaria and it's world famous Octoberfest. Tschüs.
