Dulles layover - how long does it take to go to Udvar Hazy Center?
My husband and I will have a 6 hour lay over in Dulles next week. I read that there is a $2 shuttle bus to get to this Musuem. Anyone been there? Is it doable in a few hours?

I have not been there but if you look at the map ahead of time and pick / choose the highlights that you want to see, you could just see them. I know I could spend all day there...then again, I work on jet engines so I love air museums. Id just watch out for how much time you really have to go outside the airport (time to get off plane, re-entering airport, etc).

It's a 15 minute shuttle ride each way, so if you can plan your time carefully, I would think the highlights of Udvar-Hazy could be seen during your layover. Here is the link to the shuttle http://www.vatransit.org/

Tenthumbs, once upon a time there was a shuttle from Air & Space downtown to Udvar-Hazy; now one has to either rely on taxi, vehicle, or patch together other public transportation.
Loudoun County Transit has buses from West Falls Church Metro that connect to Virginia Regional Transit, but I'm sure it's a brutally long bus ride.
Another via public transportation is to take the Orange Line to West Falls Church Metro, take the Washington Flyer to Dulles ($18 round trip per person, however), then connect to the shuttle I described above.

Cheaper than fourfortravel's Metro plus Flyer from DC would be Metrobus 5A from L'Enfant Plaza or Rosslyn to Dulles at $6/person/trip.

kayd, I knew there had to be a WMATA route! I was using the Trip Planner from DC to Udvar Hazy, when it should have been DC to Dulles, and kept getting the "There is no Itinerary" message. Thanks! This will come in most useful for the future.

I just returned from my trip to DC and owe a huge thank you to those who recommended this museum and to kayd for the transportation instructions. We ended up taking the Metro to Rosslyn, the 5A bus to Dulles, and the shuttle (which was 50 cents each way per person) to Udvar-Hazy. Even with all the travel time and the transfers, it was well worth it. My 6-year old nephew was thrilled to see the SR-71, my sister and I were thrilled to see the space shuttle Enterprise, the Concorde and the Enola Gay. This museum was MUCH less crowded than the Air and Space Museum on the Mall!
