driving tour of the U.P.

Any suggestion on prettiest route from
west to east of the U.P. during late July.
Also any attractions or must-sees.

I drove through the UP with my parents when I was in high school. I don't remember what roads we took. But it was so beautiful, and the weather was perfect, at least compared to hot, sticky St. Louis.

We visited Houghton, Sault Ste. Marie, Escanaba, Alpina and Mackinac Island. I liked everyplace, but Mackinac was by far the most interesting. I remember taking the ferry to the island and you could see through the cyrstal clear water. The island is a lot of fun. Rent a bike and ride around the island. Bring lots of bug spray. I remember getting bit to death the whole week we were there. Have fun!

The U.P. is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

And sorry for the error - it is, of course, "crystal" clear water!

Must-sees: the "Pictured Rocks" boat tour along Lake Superior, and Tahquamenon (sp?) Falls. Copper Harbor is interesting if you get up that far north -- the sand on the beach is the color of pennies. In the west, Porcupine Mtns. and Lake of the Clouds.
