driving from Chicago to Waterloo, what to see along the way?
Hi all. In Nov. we are flying into Chicago and driving to Waterloo Iowa for Thanksgiving. Is there anything to stop and see while on this five hour drive? Any universities, points of interest, churchs, or should we just keep driving through?

The Field of Dreams (from the Kevin Costner movie) is a little over a half hour east of Waterloo.
There's some beautiful scenery along the Mississippi River around Dubuque (IA) and Galena (IL).
Very little to see between Chicago and the Miss IMO.

If the weather is good, you might enjoy a stop at White Pines State Park, which has a nice lodge with good food. There are a half-dozen short hiking trails in the park, which has the last stand of white pines in the area. It's about 2 hours from Chicago, between DeKalb and Dixon; see the State of Illinoi website for more information.

Galena, IL is a neat little town if you like 1800's architecture, antiques, etc. You can tour President Grant's home as well as a few others. Dubuque IA has a nice new river museum that is certainly worth a stop. Both of these towns are right on Highway 20.

Personally, I'd fly from Chicago to Waterloo. If you take highway 20, stop in Galena and maybe have lunch/dinner there (plenty of places in town) or try Timmerman's in Dubuque overlooking the river.

PS - in Galena - Grant's or Log Cabin are favorites; lots of antique and home deocr type shops (Karen's comes to mind as a must stop/shop place); University of Dubuque or Loras college are possible stops but I can't vouch for any scenic qualities; try to see Chestnut Mountain if you really have some extra time between Galena and Dubuque - they have an alpine slide which can be fun.
