Drivetime: I26 to Kiawah Marathon
I'll be staying Friday night before the Kiawah (half for me) marathon at a friend's house just off I26 on the Ashley River. How long do you think it would take to drive to the entrace of Kiawah where the shuttles will be? I have to be there by 6:45 a.m., so one assumes traffic is not a consideration.
Thanks! (any other 1/2 marathon tips from you Charleston runners greatly appreciated)

I would think at least 45 mins to an hour, depending on exactly where you are coming from (I-26 and Sam Rittenburg area, I assume). All of the roads to Kiawah end up one lane each way at some point and if you get behind a slow vehicle it could even add to that. I would think getting there a few minutes early would beat rushing and worrying about being late. Maybe GoTravel has done that drive specifically for the marathon and knows what the traffic is like. The only time I've driven that route at that time is going the opposite way headed home from Kiawah.

Litespeed,
I ran the OBX marathon this past Sunday--so don't freak out! You haven't missed Kiawah. I can only tell you that I know people who have run the Kiawah half and say it was a very nice course.
I hope you have a great race!

GREAT, 1:46 , which was about 14 minutes less than my goal. I was thrilled. It was so cold, I took off way too fast...could have been disasterous, but I was able to limit my losses in the later miles. There were actually ice patches on the course.
I had never raced more than a 10k before, and had never before taken on fluid during a race. This was a mistake to try in a half, around mile 7 I could feel a teensy cramp brewing in one calf. I started drinking every water station after that. I don't think it hurt my time much, but I limped, LITERALLY, for 4 days following the race.
I understand the hot shower followed by lots of wine was not the most conducive-to-recovery post race plan, either.
Oh, and it took about 45 minutes to Kiawah that morning, but FOREVER on Friday afternoon about 4:30 when we went to do packet-pickup.
Thanks for asking.
