Dress for a Matinee of Wicked

My family and I are planning a trip to NYC in a few weeks. We've been once before and dressed up for an evening show of Les Miserables. This time we are attending a matinee showing of Wicked and I'm not sure how to dress. Would you recommend more business casual or dress for ladies and jacket and tie for men?

I would say dress the way that you believe is appropriate. The days of people dressing for the theater are long gone.

A tie would be a rarity at an evening performance, let alone a matinee.

If you plan to dress by how others are dressed you could find yourself in baggy jeans with a sideways baseball cap.

casual is the afternoon dress. Just went to a matinee on sunday and everyone was casual. It depends if your going out afterward for dinner also.

Sadly, people don't dress for the theater (or much of anything!) anymore. People dress for where they're going before and after the theater. If you're going out to lunch before or dinner after, that should guide what you wear. You'll see everything from jeans and t shirts to bus. casual. Very few places except an office require men to wear ties these days.

There probably will be people somewhat more dressed up, but I would think that almost anything clean and attractive would be fine. (Just no athletic clothes, old and dirty sneakers and jeans, etc.--would probably say no sneakers for adults but dressy jeans, cords, etc. should be fine--and you will see a lot of variation)

Broadway shows, airplanes, concerts - now, believe us, "Anything Goes."

Not quite. I think someone in a swimsuit would be turned away - but as long as you're covered they'll let you in.

If you want to be a little more presentable, more power to you - but unfortunately shredded jeans, misshapen tees and dirty sneakers can be seen at every theater.

A year ago I was asking this same question. We chose to dress up a bit, simply because it was Broadway! Most of the people in the theatre were tourists wearing whatever they had worn all day (shorts and t-shirt,etc.) Later in the summer we went to a musical at the Bass Hall in Ft. Worth. We dressed down a bit-dressier than the Broadway crowd, but not dressy. Boy, were we underdressed..ladies were in gowns, black cocktail dresses, men in suits and ties, etc. So funny to think of dressing up for the theatre in Ft. Worth but not for Broadway!

This doesn't have much to do with casual or not, but when Wicked was in Boston, a lot of women wore black. You are in for a treat!

"So funny to think of dressing up for the theatre in Ft. Worth but not for Broadway!"

The people in Fort Worth were probably expecting to run into someone they know.

IMO, it's always better to be dressed as though you might run into someone you know. Of course, for some people that means jeans and t-shirt with a slogan.

For a matinee- leather shoes and nice jeans, pants.

I think I have seen everything now-- recently went to a funeral where more than one attendee had on jeans...I am an ex hippie but that was too much for me...dress in a way that makes you happy-- if you want to dress up to make it more special, you should!

How about costumes like folks do for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Start a trend.

I've always worn a comfortable skirt and top to a matinee. It seems to fit all recommendations...you look comfortable and easy going but you are "dressed up" for the theatre. As for men, I would say dockers and a polo shirt or casual button down for a matinee would be fine..the same idea as above

NeoPatrick, green or black, I guess. I definitely noticed a lot of black. And, one of the songs that Galinda sings is about black being this year's pink...

I would wear dressy jeans, a nice top or sweater, shrunken blazer, and cute heels. If not jeans, then I would wear a cute sweater dress, tights, and either flats or knee high boots.

shrunken blazer? Why not splurge and buy a new one that fits?

Just be comfortable. In NYC, no one dresses up for the theatre, especially in the afternoon.
