Door County - Thanksgiving?

Hi,

My husband and I are thinking of getting out of town for Thanksgiving and thought Door County would be good since it's a fairly easy drive from Chicago.

We've never been there before (just moved here) and are wondering what it will be like around Thanksgiving...would there be any restaurants open for a Thanksgiving dinner?

We don't mind doing outdoor activities in cold weather -- I'm assuming it will be cold -- but will other attractions be open in late November. The drive-in movie appeals to me!!

Thanks for any info!

Your best bet is to do some investigating starting with
http://www.doorcountyvacations.com/.

Door County shuts up pretty tight for winter--though there may be some pre-xmas activity. Many of the business don't have heat and seasonal activity is pretty limited if you are looking for something "inside". On the other hand, it can be gorgeous up there no matter what time of the year if you want to hike through the state park. We often go up there in the very early spring--in April before things open up again--and it is always nice. There is enough to keep us busy in terms stores, etc, though many places are closed.

I have never been to Door County at Thanksgiving. I imagine it will be pretty cold and there might not be much to do. If you are looking for somewhere special to go for dinner, try the Inn at Kristofers or Hotel Du Nord. I would also suggest going to Lake Geneva. The Grand Geneva is all decorated for Christmas and has lots of nice light displays while you are driving in. They have a couple of great restaurants and you could do spa services. You could go into town if you wanted to do some shopping.

If you are not too set on Door County, this romantic get away is close, check our www.canoebay.com.
This private retreat was heaven to us. It may be up your alley...Great gourmet dining, a wonderful wine cellar. Enjoy!

Canoebay has always sounded wonderful to me.........but don't even bother with the website unless you walk with a limp from an overfull wallet.

Door County at Thanksgiving: As in so many other places, T Day is really the kick-off to the whole Christmas holiday thing. In Egg Harbor, for instance, there is a Holly Days festival, with caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony in the village park and other activites; there are lots of events that w/e in Sturgeon Bay as well, I believe.

Quite a few restaurants will be offering T'giving dinners. And the first poster is a bit off-target. DC most certainly does NOT close up for the winter...it's an important part of the overall tourist season - IF there is snow to draw the skiers and snowmobile folk. And things aren't "unheated," there's just a "hey, it's winter - deal with it!" attitude. So wear heavy or layered socks and heavyweight shoes.

Many lodging establishments offer fireplace accommodations, so it can really live up to the "getaway to someplace cozy in the woods" ideal.

But be aware - it's the final weekend of the gun deer-hunting season. Part of Peninsula State Park are open to visitors; other portions are reserved for hunters.

One of my favorite places to stay, anywhere, is the Cornerstone Suites in Egg Harbor. A restored barn with lots of charm and huge accomidations for a great price. We've stayed in the Cornerstone Suite, which is huge. The silo is part of the suite and there is a jacuzzi in its base and a reading room with windows around the top of the silo. HUGE, you'll feel clostrophobic staying in hotels or band b and bs again.

I also like the Nettie Suite in the back. It's smaller but still much larger than
hotel rooms, with two stories and a jacuzzi overlooking the field in the back.

My wife and I found ourselves here on Sept. 11. I must admit that we felt guilty being in such a beautiful place
on such a tragic day. Later, when I quit my job without having another job, I came here for a "get your head together" retreat. It's really a special place.

Aloha TerriT,

Door Co. will be wonderful at Thanksgiving.... MUST eat at the Mission Grill in Sister Bay... a converted church with an incredible menu, and lovely decor... don't miss their gift shop.... many delightful unique trinkets!!

If you love to shop make sure to stop at Turtle Ridge, handmade leather tooled bags w/ awesome painted designs... I can't visit the Door w/o stopping here... also not to miss for ladies clothing... Imported in Egg Harbor.... say HI to Laura the owner from Lisa from Antioch! Beware, you'll drop some cash here

Pennisula State Park won't be as much fun to bike this time of year, but will still be delightful by car. Take your time.

Also, check out Newport Beach Park... lovely too.

We enjoy to stay at the Homestead Suites in Fish Creek, and also at a private residence in Ellison Bay called Timberline Road Home... available through a real estate property mgmt in Sister Bay, Lundquist Realty (lunquistrealty.com).

Homestead Suites is nice for the in room jacuzzi's and the indoor pool... we also like the tucked back in the woods ambiance of Timberline Rd. Home.
Either way you'll enjoy the stay.

Check into "Big Mouth" a local band that plays in Door Co. regularly. Sometimes they do a concert at the Door Co. Auditorium, and sometimes they'll play at the local spots like CC Supper Club or the Bayside Tavern. They are the best blues going. I have a few of their CD's and everyone who listens wants to know who they are!

The Door is a wonderful destination, and once you go... you'll forever go back!!

Hi TerriT,

One of our favorite places to eat and stay in the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. The main lodge has the dining room on the first floor and about 4 suite rooms upstairs. All have updated everything with beautiful wallpapers and fabrics.
They also have about 4 other new buildings surrounding the main one. Each has been either built new to look older or has been totally refurbished over the last couple of years. All have gorgeous rooms/suites in them with fireplaces, etc.
The food is excellent at the dining room. The breakfasts are to die for and so are the candlelight dinners.
They have a website with lots of photos. Think it is whitegullinn.com. Not sure.

I have never heard of Door County closing up in the winter with no heat in the buildings.

Have fun!
