Don Ho, RIP

He just passed away this morning. I wouldn't even know about it except my phone has been ringing off the hook with media trying to confirm.

For those who aren't that familiar, here's a website:
http://www.donho.com/index2.html

He was one "nappy Ho" who everyone seemed to love.

Very sad. My favorite however was Alfred Apaka. Don Ho came a little bit after him. I have records...yes vinyl..from both of them. Kind of the end of an era.

MelissaHI, does Al Harrington still perform anywhere? I interviewed him as an Army journalist back in 1982 and he was a fantastic person - even sent a stuffed animal when my daughter was born which she (at 24) still sleeps with to this day!

You can probably see the video coverage at:
www.khnl.com
www.kgmb.com
www.kitv.com
I'm not sure if khon.com has it. but they should.

Postal, not sure where Al Harrington is these days but his sons, Tau and Alema, have been busy. I know Alema is a sports radio personality....not sure if Tau still is.

So here's to the golden moon
And here's to the siver sea
And mostly here's a toast to you, Don Ho, from me!

We have pleasant memories of seeing him at a show while on our honeymoon in Hawaii 37 years ago. He came by and wished us luck - we have a picture of him somewhere.

Hope your journey was peaceful.

Mahalo for all the memories you have given the people in Hawaii (and around the world for that matter) for may years!! I know that you Moe (Keale) and Iz (the one & only) will be keeping the Stew warm, the glass full of "Tiny Bubbles" and the stings on the uke in tune for me when it's my time!!
Mahalo for the music and laughter!!

I just realized that I don't have a meaningful personal story to share. The only encounter I had with him was at Don Ho's Island Grill a few years ago. He was walking around the restaurant, saying hi to people...then accidentally bumped into my chair. He turned to me and said, "Oh....excuse me! My okole is too big, eh." ha! It happened to be on or around my birthday so my friend got really excited. She said, "It's a sign that it will be a good year! You've been christened by The Don himself!"
